Work by artist Gary Halberstadt, president of the Brunswick Arts Council, is being featured at Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash through May 30.

The exhibit features landscapes of local waterway scenes as well as paintings inspired by Halberstadt’s travels through Europe.

The Brooklyn, N.Y., native taught himself to paint while in the Army and painted intermittently before moving to Brunswick County. A minor accident in 2005 curtailed most of his activities but laid the groundwork for his artistic resurgence.

He has participated in workshops with Margaret Hoybach and John Poon.

In 2005, Halberstadt was invited to serve on the board of directors of the Brunswick Arts Council. He became president in 2006 and will serve until his term ends in November. The former businessman was also a co-founder the Alliance of Brunswick County Property Owners Association in 1999 and was president of the organization for six years. He also serves on the executive committee for Brunswick County’s Coastal Events Center.

Halberstadt, who paints primarily in acrylics, says he makes energetic use of his camera to capture images of nature and beauty.

“I translate the tapestry and harmony of an image onto canvas as an aesthetic expression, influenced by the emotion and mood it engenders. I enjoy ‘flowing’ with my brushes and producing a work of impressionism steeped in reality.”

Halberstadt also uses photographs simply as an inspirational device so often, his finished canvas bears little resemblance to the photo. At times, he simply puts brush to canvas and paints a subject from his imagination. He says painting is the purest form of joy.ee
