    Yacht Club elects new officers
    The Cape Fear Yacht Club (CFYC) has elected new officers for 2013. The announcement was made by 2012 commodore Janice Duncan-Ramieh at the CFYC clubhouse on Dec. 9.
    The new officers are commodore Ray Bolling, vice commodore Ken Haubrich and rear commodore David Forsyth.
    Board of governors includes Chris Webster, Dave Weigel, Donna Coleman, Debbie Bischoff and Ricky Evans. Mike Elliott was appointed as fleet captain.

    Newcomers Club meets Jan. 10
    The Southwest Brunswick Newcomers Club (SWBNC) will meet from 10 a.m.-noon Thursday, Jan. 10, in the fellowship hall at Shallotte Presbyterian Church, 5070 MH Rourk Drive in Shallotte. Doors will open at 9:30 a.m. for new members to join and to sign up for scheduled recurring activities and planned special events.

    SBI Rotary celebration set for Feb. 21
    Join the South Brunswick Islands Rotary Club for a celebration of 25 years of service to the community.
    The celebration will start at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb 21, 2013, at the South Brunswick Islands Campus of Brunswick Community College in Carolina Shores, near the U.S. 17 entrance to Crow Creek.
    Dinner and a champagne toast for spouses and non-Rotarian guests will be $30. A cash bar will be open at registration. RSVP by Jan 18, 2013.

  • ORCA donates $8,000 to New Hope Clinic

    The Ocean Ridge Charities Association (ORCA), a two-year old neighborhood charity in Brunswick County, recently donated $8,200 to the New Hope Clinic in Boiling Spring Lakes. It is the county’s only comprehensive free clinic that provides basic medical and dental care, as well as diagnostic services and prescription drugs to low-income, uninsured residents of Brunswick County.
    The money raised was derived from ORCA’s fall fundraising campaign, according to Judy Cunningham, an ORCA board member who coordinated the effort.

  • Shallotte Lions visit Boys and Girls Homes

    The Shallotte Lions Club recently visited the Lions Cottage at the Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina at Lake Waccamaw.
    The home is dedicated to providing a comprehensive array of residential and community-based services to meet the needs of vulnerable children by addressing their physical, emotional, social, educational and spiritual development.
    Their vision is to be a leading human services provider, addressing the ever-changing needs of children and families, led by people of excellence and compassion.

    Wine society to host tasting Nov. 4
    The Ocean Isle Beach Chapter of the American Wine Society will have its next wine tasting event for area wine lovers and their guests beginning at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 4 at the Silver Coast Winery, 6680 Barbeque Road in Ocean Isle Beach.
    The theme for this meeting will be “The Wonders of Spanish Wines” and will feature six premium red wines from several of Spain’s prominent wine regions.

    The Retired School Personnel of Brunswick County will meet at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 15, at the Progress Energy Visitors Center. Brunswick County Sheriff John Ingram will be the guest speaker, and will discuss the new and continuing programs for retirees. All retired educators are welcome to attend.

    Seniors to meet Oct. 8
    Holden Beach Senior Citizens will meet at the Lockwood Folly Community Building on Stanbury Road at 6 p.m. Oct. 8. Bring food to complement the cookout.
    There will be prizes for bingo. For the meeting, be sure to bring cans for personal use, labels and points for Shallotte Middle School, stamps for missionaries overseas and coupons for veterans.
    Remember to bring non-perishable foods for a local food bank. Reservations will be taken for the trip to Templewood in Fayetteville on Oct. 19. Cost is $15 per person and includes a meal.

  • Old Bridge Preservation Society volunteer spotlight: Gerry Strickland

    During Labor Day weekend, the Old Bridge Preservation Society (OBPS) completed another successful summer at the old bridge. Now OBPS membership is looking forward to fall events.
    Throughout the summer, OBPS volunteers were pleased that visitors recognized the positive changes to the old bridge since last summer, such as new landscaping, improvements to the tender house, and accessibility.
    Locals and visitors shared stories and memories and what this iconic bridge in Sunset Beach meant to them.
