  • ORCA donates $10,000 to hospice

    Brunswick County’s newest neighborhood foundation, the Ocean Ridge Charities Association (ORCA), has donated $10,000 to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCareCenter’s Closer to Home capital campaign. The gift was originally planned as a five-year pledge, but ORCA raised the funds from within the Ocean Ridge community in less than 90 days. A family alcove at SECU Hospice House of Brunswick will be named in honor of ORCA’s gift.

  • Golf ladies work to support hospice house

    The Lockwood Folly Ladies’ Golf Association hosted a fundraiser with Lockwood Folly members, friends and neighbors to benefit the Closer to Home campaign to build a new Hospice and LifeCare Center in Brunswick County. It is due to open in Bolivia in July.

    Elks to award service March 16
    Shallotte Elks 2854 in Shallotte will honor those who provided outstanding service to the town of Shallotte and Brunswick County at its annual awards dinner at 5:30 p.m. March 16.
    The dinner is open to the public and will take place at The Woodman of The World on Commerce Street in Shallotte. There is an $8 donation for adults and $4 for children younger than 10.

    GOP women to meet March 1
    The Brunswick County Republican Women will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 1, at Brunswick County GOP headquarters, 971 Old Ocean Highway in Bolivia. Guest speaker will be Becki Gray, vice president of outreach at the John Locke Foundation. She provides information and consultation to decision-makers involved in the state public policy process and will discuss the N.C. Council of State, a popular elected group of executive offices. Council of State members are often confused with cabinet members, organizers said.

    Officers named for Mostly Bluegrass Society
    The Mostly Bluegrass Society has named Jim Caulder as its president for this year. Willis Alston was selected as vice president and Tom and Ellen Freeman were elected as new directors.
    The Mostly Bluegrass Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of traditional music performed live. The group meets from 5:30-8 p.m. every Friday at the Shallotte Senior Center.

  • Rotary guests win big at Las Vegas night

    The Shallotte Rotary hosted its seventh annual Las Vegas Night on Saturday, Jan. 28. It was a night of fun that raised funds and awareness for local and international charities.
    There were door prizes and silent auction gifts, culminating with the drawing of door prizes and the awarding of a seven-day/six-night Las Vegas vacation.

    Members of the National Society North Carolina Colonial Dames 17th Century, including state president Lollie Holland and other officers, traveled from Greensboro and other areas of North Carolina to help the Lord Craven Chapter celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the chapter.

    Canine Angels benefit dinner is Feb. 25
    A spaghetti dinner to benefit Canine Angels will take place 5-8 p.m. Feb. 25 at Dirty Dick’s Restaurant, 1101 N. Kings Hwy. in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.
    For a $10 donation, each patron will be served a dinner of spaghetti, salad, bread, dessert and soft drinks. There will also be a raffle and a 50/50 event.
    All proceeds will go to Canine Angels dogs for disabled veterans. For ticket information, call Kathy at (843) 399-2939. No tickets will be sold at the door.

  • Squadron conducts Change of Watch

    The Shallotte River Sail and Power Squadron conducted its annual Change of Watch ceremony at the Jasmine Restaurant at Brunswick Plantation on Friday, Jan. 20. This annual event is scheduled to mark the changeover of squadron officers and to recognize various individuals for their outstanding service. The squadron’s primary mission is to promote boating safety for the community by providing boating classes for those new to boating, as well as to more experienced boaters.
