  • St. James Service Club kicks off New Year

    The St. James Service Club has begun the New Year with its record-breaking Membership Meeting and Volunteer Fair.

    On Jan. 12, more than 240 people attended the club’s first meeting at the new community center. The January meeting is devoted to registering new members and sharing information about upcoming fundraising programs.

    Following the meeting, the Volunteer Fair kicked into gear, with each fundraising committee soliciting help for all of the events planned for 2011.

  • Elks to help at Hope Harbor

    With some help from the Elks National Foundation, the charitable arm of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, the Calabash Elks will renovate the children’s indoor recreational and study area at Hope Harbor Home’s domestic violence shelter to make it more conducive to learning and sharing.

  • St. James has rifle, pistol club

    The St. James Rifle and Pistol Club, with 39 members, has conducted its major safety training under the guidance of NRA certified instructors Rob Jerome (rifle and pistol certification) and Bill Boston (shotgun certification). They have an ongoing safety training program that is mandatory for all members and a new course will begin in early February.

    The club has afforded all members the opportunity to fire various kinds of sporting and target firearms, including revolvers, semi-auto pistols, rifles and shotguns.

    Brunswick DAR to meet Jan. 12

    The Brunswick Town Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will meet at 10 a.m. Jan. 12 in the fellowship hall at Trinity United Methodist Church, 209 East Nash St. in Southport. Organized on Jan. 30 1976 by Mrs. Lewis W. Bowlin, the chapter will be celebrating 35 years of service.

    Card party set for Jan. 11

    The Calabash Elks Ladies Auxiliary will have a card party/Chinese auction and luncheon from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, at Ocean Garden Buffet in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

    Tickets are $13 each. For tickets and details, call Rose Henshaw at 755-0126 or Jean Palmer at 579-1601. All proceeds will be disbursed to local charities.

  • Shallotte Rotary Club plans January Las Vegas Night

    On Jan. 29, Shallotte Rotary Club will have its sixth Las Vegas Night at 101 Stone Chimney Road from 6-10 p.m.

    Eight years ago, the Shallotte Rotary Club spun off from its sister club, the South Brunswick Island Rotary Club, which is a breakfast club. Having a lunch club that met centrally in Shallotte gained a lot of attention, and today the nearly 30 members of the Shallotte club are one of the strongest clubs in District 7730.

  • Rotary speakers talk about exchange program

    Each year, Rotary International sponsors Group Study Exchanges (GSE) around the world as a cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for business people and professionals that are in the early stages of their careers and are between the ages of 25 and 40.

    Rotary District 7730 (eastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia) is sponsoring a GSE team to Uruguay in April 2011 and South Brunswick Islands Rotarian Martha Warner has been selected by Rotary District 7730 to be the Rotarian leader of the four to six GSE member team.

  • Brunswick Newcomers to meet Nov. 17

    The Brunswick Newcomers Club will meet on Wednesday, Nov. 17, at the Southport Community Center, 223 E. Bay St. (between Bay and Moore streets). The meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m. with coffee and refreshments followed by the formal meeting at 10 a.m. Signup sheets for various activities and trips will also be available at the meeting.

    Howard (Howie) Franklin, director of the Cape Fear Regional Jetport, will share a few stories about his service aboard Air Force One. He is the only person to work for five U.S. presidents consecutively.

    Holden Beach Beautification Club members and guests will meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, at the Holden Beach Chapel for their annual tasting luncheon.

    Each member should bring a favorite dish; the recipe for the dish should be sent to Lynda Brown. Hostesses for the event will be Dolly Mitchell, Jane Ivey, Peggy Allen, Lynda Brown and Jean Alford.

    The Southwest Brunswick Newcomers Club (SWBNC) will meet from 10 a.m.-noon Thursday, Nov. 11, in the fellowship hall of Shallotte Presbyterian Church, 5070 M.H. Rourk Drive in Shallotte.

    Doors open at 9:30 a.m. for new members to join and to sign up for scheduled activities.
