    Lecture on diabetes scheduled April 16
    There will be a free informational lecture, “Taking Control of Diabetes,” with Owen Medd, a diabetes patient and member of the A1C Champions Program, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, in the second-floor classroom at Dosher Memorial Hospital, 924 N. Howe St. in Southport.
    The lecture is sponsored by Sanofi.
    Learn how to have better blood-sugar control from a real diabetes patient who understands the challenges of living with diabetes. The presentation will include time for questions and answers.

    Families to play giant Chutes & Ladders game
    Giant fun is headed to Brunswick County. From 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, parents and kids will be coming together at Kids Day in the Park for a life-sized Chutes & Ladders game to spread the word that giving our kids a good start is not a game.
    MomsRising, The First 2,000 Days Campaign, and Smart Start of Brunswick County are hosting the game to remind our community and leaders that investing in kids means investing in N.C.’s future.

  • Garden tour set for April 6

    The Boiling Spring Lakes Garden Club will be hosting a garden tour, “From Butterflies to Bogs,” from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. April 6.
    All proceeds will benefit the planned BSL children’s playground. Tickets are available at the BSL Community Center and Southport Chamber of Commerce, or call 845-0608.
    The garden tour will include garden clubs’ gardens, as well as private gardens. Included will be the garden club’s award-winning butterfly garden and its newest addition, the bog garden.

    Class on living with osteoporosis
    Anyone who knows someone who has broken a bone due to osteoporosis understands the pain and potential disability caused by this disease. Characterized by fragile bones, osteoporosis is a major public health problem. Nearly half of all women, and a quarter of all men older than 50, will break a bone because of osteoporosis.

  • Museum’s horseshoe crab sheds its shell

    If you were visiting the Museum of Coastal Carolina on Friday, March 1, you witnessed a special treat when one of the horseshoe crabs in the museum’s touch tank started to molt.
    Like many animals with hard shells, a horseshoe crab must shed its shell (or molt) in order to grow larger. A horseshoe crab goes through 16-17 molts during its lifetime. With each molt, it increases in size by about 25-30 percent.
