  • Calabash gallery plans group show

    Sunset River Marketplace art gallery in Calabash will host Anything Goes, a multi-artist show presented by Art Matters, a studio art group that meets to paint and critique their work on Thursday afternoons at the gallery.
    The show opens Oct. 5 and runs through Nov. 3. A public reception is scheduled from 4-6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13.

    Friends of the Library to meet Sept. 25
    The Southport and Oak Island Friends of the Library annual meeting will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, at the Southport Community Building, 223 East Bay St. in Southport. Guest speaker will be Wilmington Star News writer and author Ben Steelman.
    Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.
    Steelman is a co-author of “Wilmington on Film,” which chronicles more than 25 years of TV and film production in the Cape Fear region. He will focus on productions in Brunswick County.

  • ‘Dorothy meets Alice’ this November

    What would it be like if Dorothy of “The Wizard of Oz” and Alice of “Alice in Wonderland” were to meet? What would they think of each other? Would they be friends? How would the characters in their books react to each other?
    Stagestruck Players, the youth division or Brunswick Little Players, will shed some light on the possibility as to how these pairings might work in their upcoming production of “Dorothy Meets Alice.”

    The West Brunswick High School girls’ tennis team beat East Bladen 8-1 on Sept. 11.
    In singles, Penny Watts (WB) beat Carolina Sarmiento 6-0, 6-0. Rachel Norton (WB) beat Samantha Bratt 6-0, 6-0. Sarah Harman (WB) beat Gabrielle Monroe 6-0, 6-0. Anna James (WB) beat Sha’Lite Campbell 6-1, 6-1. Ashley Carter (WB) beat Shamek Brooks 6-1, 6-2. Hayley Grimes (WB) beat Kristi McDowell 6-0, 6-0.

  • Gallery to showcase student art

    When John Kerr retired to Southport after many years of teaching and school administration in Connecticut, he thought he’d try his hand at painting.
    “I always had a strong feeling I could do that, if I only had the time to try.”
    He signed up for Rusty Hughes oil painting class at he Franklin Square Gallery, then the watercolor class, then figure-drawing, and now spends four days a week at his easel.

  • Rock ’n’ roll show gets encore

    SOUTHPORT—The AMUZU Theatre is bringing “Rock n’ Roll Here to Stay,” back for three more weekends.
    The show sold out and people were turned away at the door, so AMUZU owners decided to keep the show going.
    It will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Sept. 21, and Sept. 22, and at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23.

    BCLC needs volunteers
    The Brunswick County Literacy Council (BCLC) began a 15-week campaign to recruit 50 tutors beginning on International Literacy Day, Sept. 8, through Dec. 1.
    In these difficult times, raising the literacy level is essential to helping residents of Brunswick County qualify for new jobs or maintain employment. The drive to recruit 50 tutors in 15 weeks addresses the need of adult and workplace literacy programs throughout Brunswick County. Please consider becoming a tutor.
