The Cooperative Council of North Carolina hosted its 2012 Leadership Camp June 18-22 at the North Carolina FFA Center at White Lake.
Sponsored by ATMC, John Bernheisel of Bolivia, Janzen Jones of Southport and Savanna Michaux of Oak Island were chosen to attend this year’s camp.
The leadership camp is an educational, five-day resident camping program consisting of speakers, workshops, recreation and small group sessions with special emphasis on how cooperatives operate and how to develop leadership skills.
Summer quilt show is July 16-Aug. 15
The Year of the Dragon is the theme of this summer’s quilt show at Franklin Square Gallery in Southport. The show, which runs from July 16-Aug. 15, is the 20th year the quilt guild has participated in a challenge show at the gallery.
Amuzu Theater in Southport will present “The Ultimate Tribute to Johnny Cash,” featuring the The Johnny Folsom Four from Raleigh, for one show only at 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4.
Johnny Cash fans of all ages can enjoy hit songs like “I Walk the Line,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Ring of Fire,” “A Boy Named Sue” and many other favorites as the group honors the “Man in Black” through a portrayal of this American legend.

Chloe Crosby is 10 years old and lives in Austin, Texas. Recently, while visiting her grandmother, Marcia, at Sandpiper Bay in Sunset Beach, she visited the Museum of Coastal Carolina in Ocean Isle Beach. She liked it so much they came back for a second visit.
She told her grandmother visiting the museum was the highlight of her vacation and wanted to do something that would help the museum, so she decided to sell lemonade and donate any money she made to the museum.
On Sunday, July 1, the trio of summer art camps sponsored by the Brunswick Arts Council and funded by ATMC ended with a two-act play written and directed by Sue MacCallum and performed by the KamKam Theater Company.
MacCallum volunteered to teach the summer art drama camp and used the campers as the actors and stagehands. The KamKam Theater Company was born and after three days of preparation, a play, “Looking Back at the Past,” was presented to parents and friends on July 1 in an auditorium at Brunswick Community College.
Artist Melanie Walter will conduct a Pine Needle Basketry workshop from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. July 20 at Sunset River Marketplace art gallery in Calabash. During the four-hour session, students will learn how to create pine needle basket focusing on how to start, coil and shape the basket.
Walter will also discuss how to find long-leaf pine needles, prepare them for use and how to seal the finished basket. One small project will be completed during the class.
On the heels of a highly successful art workshop with Sterling Edwards, Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash has announced a showing of Edwards’ newest abstract pieces at the gallery. It includes two on paper under glass and several large acrylic paintings on canvas.
The abstracts by Edwards will be available at the gallery through Sept. 30.
