  • Gallery hosts Lifetime Members Show

    Southport’s Franklin Square Gallery honors its founding artists and those who have contributed to its growth throughout its history in its Lifetime Members Show opening July 16.
    During the last three decades, 31 artists have been awarded lifetime member status, with 16 still working and residing in the area. Their vivid scenes of Southport and Oak Island, their still life’s and pottery, represent the finest of local art and will be on exhibit through Aug. 25.

    Lockwood Folly dredging
    The Army Corps of Engineers’ dredge boat, the Merritt, is in the Lockwood Folly Inlet. This is the second round of dredging in the area this year. The plan is to have enough material removed from the inlet by the end of this cycle so that the Coast Guard can return the buoys to the inlet. According to the Corps’ schedule, the Merritt should be working in Lockwood Folly through July 8.

  • Rocking to Southport Beat

    It was a country-rocking good time at the first Southport Beat in Downtown Southport on Friday, June 15. Participating shops were open until 8 p.m. and restaurants served specials. The country band Cowboy Chrome was headlined and kept the crowd dancing, and Spider Mike provided music.
    Also in Franklin Square Park, artist Jim McIntosh painted and the Winding River Car Club showed off some vehicles, while Mr. P’s Bistro, Silver Coast Winery, Moore Street Market and Ports of Call Bistro provided the crowd with samples.

    Stanley earns sheriff’s advanced certificate
    Officer James Adam Stanley of the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office was awarded the Advanced Deputy Professional Law Enforcement Certificate by the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission on June 6.

  • Sea Cruz is up next at Sunset Beach Concerts

    Sunset Beach is the scene this summer of a free community concert series.
    Concerts are 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesdays in the Village Park at Seaside Village.
    The park is on the mainland across the street from Fibber McGees Restaurant. Just look for the small gazebo, and bring a chair. There’s typically a dance floor for concert-goers who want to get up and join in.
    Each week, a different local charity will be featured. Food and drinks are available for a donation, with funds going to the featured charity of the night.

  • Sunset River Marketplace marks 10 years

    Sunset River Marketplace, an art gallery in Calabash, is noting its 10 years of operation with a month-long anniversary celebration, which includes artist demonstrations, special classes, daily drawings, art exhibition, live music and other events that began June 1 and will run through the end of the month.
    Demonstrations have been presented by potter Joe Jeffcoat, jewelry designer Janette Montgomery, pastel artist Jane Staszak, multi-media artist Babs Ludwick (collage), Sue Coley (acrylics), Elaine Bigelow (oil), and gallery owner/acrylics painter Ginny Lassiter.
