  • Dosher Foundation sponsors Healing for Generations Gala

    The Dosher Memorial Hospital Foundation, 924 N. Howe St. in Southport, hosted its second annual black-tie-optional gala at the St. James Community Center Saturday, April 28. Guests danced to the music of the Andrew Thielen Big Band of Myrtle Beach. In addition, Mr. P’s Bistro of Southport catered cocktails and an elegant spread of heavy hors d’oeuvres.

  • Summer regional show highlights Franklin Square Gallery season

    Ceramic artists, painters, and sculptors from throughout the Carolinas are showcased in Southport’s Franklin Square Gallery’s highlight of the season, the Summer Regional Show. Regional artists have been invited to join gallery members and submit their latest work for judging, and the selected art comprises this juried exhibition that runs from June 18-July 14.

    SOUTHPORT—June 7 is the opening night of the AMUZU Theatre’s new musical production, “Sing It Out.” Following a concept of popular music as it reflects our attitudes and experiences of the past 50 years, “Sing It Out” segues smoothly from decade to decade, with short narrative bridges between eras setting the stage for each time period.

  • Carnival to benefit autism set for June 2

    Next Generation will celebrate its grand re-opening with a Carnival for Autism fundraiser from 11 a.m. -3 p.m. June 2 in the Big Lots shopping center parking lot in Shallotte to help raise money for the Sapphire Autism Awareness Program.
    The program is creating a day camp for autistic children in this area. Along with Dance Connection, Next Generation Paint Your Own Pottery and Coastal Academy of Martial Arts, this will be the first summer program of the year.

    Literacy council seeks volunteer tutors
    The Brunswick County Literacy Council is seeking volunteers/tutors for a volunteer orientation workshop and an ABL tutor workshop on June 11.
    The volunteer orientation workshop for anyone interested in becoming a volunteer will be from 10 a.m.-noon Monday, June 11, at the Brunswick County Literacy Council, 282 Ocean Highway East in Supply. Light snacks will be provided.

    Too Much Sylvia takes the stage this Friday to headline the summer concert series at Ocean Isle Beach.
    From 6:30-8 p.m. this Friday, June 1, Too Much Sylvia will perform in the parking lot of the Museum of Coastal Carolina on Ocean Isle Beach.
    The family-friendly concert series is free, and the public is welcome.
    Over at Holden Beach, Gold Rush will take the stage at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, June 3, at the pavilion on the end of Jordan Boulevard.

    CALABASH—Sunset River Marketplace gallery is observing its 10th anniversary with a month-long celebration starting Friday, June 1.
    Highlights will include free drawings for gift certificates, original paintings, prints, pottery, hand-blown glass, jewelry and other items. There will also be artist demonstrations, live music and other events June 1-30.
    The gallery at 10283 Beach Drive (N.C. 179) in Calabash opened its doors on June 1, 2002.

  • Moshoures named host of ATMC-TV’s ‘The Coastal Kitchen’

    SHALLOTTE—Beginning in June, ATMC-TV will air its newest show, “The Coastal Kitchen.”
    Karen Moshoures of Ocean Isle Beach has been named host of the new bi-monthly cooking show.
    When ATMC-TV decided to expand its programming to include a cooking show, staff asked for video auditions from the community.
