  • Tablescaping program returns to Creative Exchange series

    Sunset River Marketplace’s Creative Exchange series continues in 2010 with Kathy Cody, owner of Calabash Garden Tea Room. Her presentation last year, “The Art of Tablescaping,” was so well received she is back by popular demand, organizers said.

    This year’s presentation will be from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8. Cost of the event is $5 and includes lunch. RSVPs are required due to limited seating.

  • Museum of Coastal Carolina, planetarium set fall programs, hours

    Museum of Coastal Carolina Family Programs Fall and Holiday 2010 Fall Schedule: Sept. 10-Dec. 18, Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

    Holiday Schedule open: Dec 21-23 and 28-30, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Closed Dec. 24, 25, 31 and Jan. 1.

    All day admission is $8 adults, $6 senior adults and students, $4 preschool, and age 2 and younger admitted free. Programs included with admission.

    Family Programs 

    Arrive and pay museum admission before the programs start. Late arrivals may not be admitted.

    Silver Coast to feature paintings

    Silver Coast Winery and Art Gallery will feature “Paintings From the Vineyard,” original watercolors by North Carolina native Amy Hautman, from Sept. 17-Nov. 15.

    The opening reception will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17. Come and meet the artist and see the brushwork on Hautman’s colorful paintings depicting, grapevines, flowers and landscapes.

  • Civil War round table meetings will begin Sept. 7

     Sept. 7 begins the upcoming series of monthly Civil War round table meetings at Trinity United Methodist Church, 209 E. Nash St. in Southport, across from the Southport Post Office.

    Registration begins at 6:30 p.m. and programs begin at 7 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend.

    This year’s meetings will feature an impressive lineup of prominent Civil War historians, authors, college professors and Civil War re-enactors presenting and discussing a variety of subjects relating to this important period in our country’s history.

  • Program targets removal of cigarette butts from the environment

     Keep Brunswick County Beautiful (KBCB) has targeted the town of Oak Island with its Cigarette Litter Prevention Program (CLPP).

    In this case, the CLPP program is designed to educate beachgoers of the environmental impacts of tossing their butts to the ground versus disposing of cigarette litter properly. KBCB provided freestanding receptacles and ashtrays for proper cigarette butt disposal.

  • Veterans assistance set for Oct. 19

     Veterans in the Bolivia area can enroll in the VA healthcare system, receive health screenings and health information, and find out about various services available to them through the Veterans Health Administration from representatives of the Fayetteville VA Medical Center.

    The center’s Rural Health Team will be set up in the Brunswick County Cooperative Extension’s training/conference room from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19.

  • Submissions needed for Calling All Teachers

     U.S. Cellular plans to kick off the school year with the return of Calling All Teachers, a campaign that donates $1 million to fund creative and impactive classroom projects submitted by public school teachers. 

    Through Sept. 15, teachers are invited to register on DonorsChoose.org as a “U.S. Cellular Teacher” and post their requests to be considered for funding. So far, more than 1,490 teachers have signed up.

  • Volunteers needed to help with local schools

     Communities in Schools of Brunswick County Inc. (CIS) provides the Adopt-A-School and Volunteer Program to Brunswick County Schools to enhance the quality of education by bringing the community and its resources to the children. 

    Through business, church, agency and civic group partnerships brokered for each individual school, CIS helps schools in their efforts to provide a better education for the children of Brunswick County.
