    Coastal Shag Club to shag into New Year
    Coastal Shag Club is hosting a Cheers to a New Year dance from 7-10:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Moose Lodge, 253 Holden Beach Road in Shallotte. Jim Bruno will be the deejay.
    Cost is $5 for any Shag Club member, $8 for non-members/guests. The Moose Lodge will sell soda and adult beverages. Everyone is welcome. Bring an appetizer or dessert to share.

  • Ruth Cox art on display

    Sunset River Marketplace, an art gallery in Calabash, will present “Ruth Cox: Works in Oil” from
    Jan. 7-Feb. 16.
    The exhibition will feature more than 30 paintings by the Myrtle Beach, S.C., artist. There will be a reception to meet the artist from
    2-5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12. The public is invited.
    According to gallery owner Ginny Lassiter, paintings will include landscapes, coastal scenes, florals and other still lives.

    The Coastal Carolina Camera Club will exhibit its members’ photographs in the art gallery of Silver Coast Winery beginning Saturday, Jan. 5, through the end of the month.
    An opening reception is planned from 2-5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5.

  • Camera Club names holiday photo winners

    The Coastal Carolina Camera Club hosted its annual awards presentation and Christmas social on Dec. 11 at Shallotte Presbyterian Church.
    Jody Hazzard, publisher and editor-in-chief of Grand Strand Magazine, judged the print of the year competition, which included all winning competition prints during the year.
    Jerry Koons image, “I Have Lunch,” was selected as the winner. The photographer of the year award was also presented to Koons for accumulating the most points in bi-monthly competition.

    Deadline to enter pageant is Jan. 1
    Applications are now available for the 2013 Brunswick County Purple Ribbon Pageant that will take place Feb. 3. It is a registered Relay for Life team and is involved in other charities throughout Brunswick County.
    The pageant is a natural system, meaning no makeup, fake teeth or fake hair on little girls. Age divisions for girls include Baby Miss and Queen. Deadline to enter is Jan. 1, 2013.

  • Local veterinarian helps animals and victims of Hurricane Sandy

    In the days after Hurricane Sandy ripped across the East Coast, local veterinarian Dr. Patrick Terry was on the phone with a fellow vet on Long Island.
    “He said it was cold and miserable and people were really suffering,” said Terry, co-owner of Brunswick Forest Veterinary Hospital in Leland. “He said they just really needed help and when somebody asks for help, what makes the system work is if we go and help them.”
    So he did.

    Party rentals, caters, venues, florists, cake bakeries, wine shops, video productions, disc jockeys, accommodations, photographers, transportation, wedding officials and planners all specializing in weddings will be at the Southern Cape Fear Bridal Expo from
    1-4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, at the Southport Community Building.
