The Economic and Workforce Development Department (EWD) at Brunswick Community College offers short-term programs and classes for self-improvement, cultural enrichment, and academic achievement geared towards adults seeking skills for employment, intellectual stimulation, community involvement, and social interaction. Many small business courses are free due to funding from a Small Business Center grant.
The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) has announced that 179 high school seniors from 44 counties, including four students from Brunswick County, have been named UNCG iSchool Scholars for their outstanding performance in online early college classes.
Griffin Hewett, daughter of Ginny and Jamie Varnum of Bolivia and Timothy Carter Hewett of Supply, was among 67 high school seniors who graduated this spring from Saint Mary’s School in Raleigh and received diplomas from Head of School Theo Coonrod during the school’s 168th commencement exercises on Sunday, May 23, in the school’s historic oak grove.
Melissa Essary, dean of the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law at Campbell University, was the commencement speaker.
SECU Foundation, funded solely by State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) membership, has presented a $10,000 four-year college scholarship to Taylor Ambrose, a senior at West Brunswick High School and daughter of Ronald and Janet Ambrose.
The scholarship was awarded for study at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, part of North Carolina’s 16-campus University of North Carolina System.
Silver Coast Winery has received two awards at this year’s annual Pacific Rim Wine Competition at the National Orange Show Events Center in Southern California and the Tasters Guild International, a wine and food appreciation society based in Grand Rapids, Mi. at the Secchia Institute of Culinary Education.
Until June 11, the top of Old Baldy Lighthouse will be closed while new windows are installed. The Smith Island Museum of History will remain open and visitors to the lighthouse will be able to climb as far as the fourth landing, where they will still have a view of Bald Head Island golf course, the mouth of the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean.
The Brunswick County Community Foundation is offering grants from the Brunswick County Unrestricted Endowment Fund for 2010.
The foundation is now seeking grant proposals in support of broad charitable purposes in the areas of arts and humanities, education, the environment, health, human services, public and societal benefit, and youth development.
