The Foundation of Brunswick Community College hosted its annual Campus and Community Fund Drive during the month of April, raising $42,494.87 for student scholarships.
The tradition of the BCC Campus and Community Fund Drive gives BCC employees the opportunity to make donations that are used to support student scholarships, with 194 employees participating and raising $20,000 toward student scholarships, exceeding the goal of $15,000.
The Brunswick County Literacy Council (BCLC) staff and volunteers spent a fun day with kids of all ages at the Up with Kids Festival at the Bill Smith Park on Oak Island on May 1. The festival was sponsored by the Ocean View Methodist Church on Oak Island.
The BCLC booth was stacked with children’s books, children reading stories to children and adults reading to children. There was something for all ages.
Other activities included a puppet show where children were the puppeteers, children’s games, puppet making and storytelling.
The Porch Parrot of Ocean Isle Beach has announced artist Ann Langshaw will be the artist-in-residence.
Both she and her husband Bruce have an extensive background in the field of art and sculpture. After earning her bachelor’s of arts degree at U.C. Santa Barbara, she has spent the last 35 years in interior design and sculpture painting and design.
Langshaw established Design Work by Ann and her work is enjoyed in Hawaii, the Florida Keys, East Coast, West Coast and Canada.

Franklin Square Gallery in Southport is calling for artists for its summer regional show, a juried exhibition June 21-July 17.
Fee is $30 for two pieces of art. Entry forms are due by June 4 and work must be submitted for judging between 10 a.m.-4 p.m. June 18.
Two nationally known artists, both now working in North Carolina, will jury the show. The 2D judge is Vae Hamilton, known for her collages. The 3D judge is Dina Wilde-Ramsing, whose pottery is in collections throughout the state.
Paws Place Animal Rescue in Boiling Spring Lakes is having a fundraising yard sale 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, June 12.
Donated items can be dropped off at the shelter at 3701 E. Boiling Spring Road from 9 a.m.-noon daily—no clothes, exercise equipment or computers.

In the United States, nearly 740,000 people experience a stroke each year. Join Richard Crane, M.D., of Brunswick Community Hospital, at a free seminar on Thursday, May 20, to learn more about how to prevent and recognize a stroke.
The seminar, which is part of Brunswick Community Hospital’s Focus on Health lecture series, will begin at 2:30 p.m. at the Brunswick Electric Community Room, 795 Ocean Highway, Shallotte. Light refreshments will be served.
Five visible planets are viewable at different times from early evening to early morning this month. In the early evening, three of the five naked eye planets are ready for your viewing pleasure. Two more naked eye planets appear in the wee hours of the morning.

The month of May is National Drug Treatment Court Month. In its honor, the Brunswick County Drug Treatment Court is hosting a basketball game.
The DTC team will challenge the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office in the second annual Celebrate Sobriety basketball game at 5:30 p.m. on May 20 at the Dinah E. Gore Fitness and Aquatic Center at Brunswick Community College.

Sunset River Marketplace’s Creative Exchange series continues with Line Dancing with Calabash Flash and Babs from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 12.
Cost of the event is $5 per person and includes lunch. RSVPs are required due to limited seating.
