  • Senator stumps for support

    This year’s election is a “dangerous cycle” that Republicans need to be aware of and act accordingly, U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole said during a visit to Brunswick County Republican Headquarters Saturday afternoon.

    “There are 23 Republicans up for re-election in the United States Senate,” Dole said. “There are only 12 Democrats. If they’re able to get a filibuster-proof Senate, all hell is going to break loose. Excuse me for saying that, but it will be a very, very difficult situation.

  • Second annual Beacon health expo a 'huge success'

    SHALLOTTE—More than 500 people came out Saturday to The Brunswick Beacon’s second annual health expo at West Brunswick High School.

    Event coordinator Christy Williamson, who called the health expo “a huge success,” said this year’s attendance was up from last year because of word of mouth from last year’s inaugural event.

    Fifty-five vendors were on hand, including doctors, pharmacists, chiropractors, medical supply vendors and various nonprofit agencies.

  • Ocean Isle Beacher tries to keep it warm at Alaskan Iditarod

    Greetings from Anchorage!

    I have been running wide open going from meeting to meeting, picking up gear, shooting shots and being involved in this incredible adventure known as The Iditarod.

    It’s cold! On the morning of March 1, it is around 15 degrees with a 14 mph wind (which is like a sharp knife shooting in you) bringing the wind chill to around zero.

    It’s 7 a.m. (11 a.m. back home) and still very dark. It looks like the middle of the night, but down below you can still see workers and volunteers setting the stage for what will be an incredible event.

  • Brunswick County Democratic Party to have precinct organizational meeting

    The Brunswick County Democratic Party will have its annual precinct organizational meetings during the weeks of March 10 and March 17.

    All meetings are free and open to any registered Democrat residing in the precinct.

    The meetings are scheduled at the following times and locations:

    7 p.m. on March 10: The Town Creek precinct will meet at the Town Creek Community Building. The Boiling Springs Lakes precinct will meet at the BSL Community Center.

    Get your cholesterol checked, donate blood and receive the latest health information from local professionals at Health Expo 2008, set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 1 at West Brunswick High School in Shallotte.

  • Theater group takes a chance with unique comedy 'Sylvia'

    A year after his successful directorial debut with “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” Brunswick Little Theatre actor/director Ron Lee has reunited several of that show’s cast members to produce “Sylvia,” a romantic comedy with a decidedly weird twist.

    The two-act play by A.R. Gurney, set for March 7 and 8 at Odell Williamson Auditorium, is the story of Greg and Kate, who move to New York City from the suburbs after their children move out. It results in depression for Greg and a newfound freedom for Kate.

  • Animal shelter passes state inspection

    Brunswick County Animal Services has received an “approved” status following an inspection at the shelter last week.

    Animal services director Richard Cooper said a state inspector was impressed with the shelter’s new air conditioning units that have been installed in the dog kennel area, as well as the overall condition of the shelter, after the Feb. 6 inspection.

  • Rape crisis center to open in Brunswick County

    Brunswick County residents seeking sexual assault counseling and assistance now have a local resource that can help.

    The Rape Crisis Center of Coastal Horizons Center Inc. in Wilmington is opening a Brunswick County office this week. The office is at 20 Medical Campus Drive, Suite 103 in Supply.
