  • Writer to speak at Sunset River Marketplace

    On Thursday, Nov. 1, North Carolina mystery writer Tom Rieber will be the guest speaker at the Sunset River Marketplace Art Gallery in Calabash, the gallery’s final Coffee with the Authors event of the year.
    Rieber will talk about his second book in the Nick Thomas mystery series, “Devil’s Parody,” which follows “Nine Irony.”
    In the novel, six gamblers lured by a $5 million prize are trapped by their own greed and find themselves playing for their lives.

    Booze It and Lose It ran through Oct. 31
    The scariest part of Halloween is not in a haunted house or in a graveyard; it is behind the wheel of a car. Impaired drivers, who choose to get behind the wheel after drinking alcohol, end up making the roads scarier than a horror movie.
    “It is important for those who plan to drink to find a designated driver,” said GHSP Director Becky Wallace. “The consequences of drinking and driving can be deadly.”

  • ‘Wreck-It Ralph’ events are set for Coastal Stadium 10

    Frank Theatres Coastal Stadium 10 in Shallotte will have a day of fun and games in celebration of the release of the Disney animated film “Wreck-It Ralph” from 1-9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2. and Saturday, Nov. 3.
    “Wreck-It Ralph” is the story of Ralph, the villain of the fictional video game “Fix-It Felix,” who decides he no longer wants to be the bad guy. He spends the movie trying to be a hero.

  • SOAR into third annual Harvest Fest to aid animals

    Celebrate the harvest-and-Halloween season and help homeless animals at the same time.
    Southport Oak Island Animal Rescue is having its third annual Harvest Fest from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27.
    Highlights include costumes, trick-or-treat, a silent auction, games and prizes, foods and drinks, a bake sale, a 50/50 raffle and door prizes.
    SOAR is at 3376 St. Charles Place off Long Beach Road (N.C. 133).

  • Arts Council names winners in annual show

    Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash hosted Brunswick Arts Council’s 2012 fall show and sale. It was judged on Sunday, Oct. 7, and opened to the public on Oct. 8.
    More than 200 works of art are included in the non-juried exhibition, including oil paintings, watercolors, pastels, collage and mixed media pieces, photography, plus three dimensional pieces in clay, wood and glass.
    Judges were Myrtle Beach, S.C., watercolorist Alex Powers and North Carolina clay artist Hiroshi Sueyoshi.
