  • Luke achieves Eagle Scout rank

    Alexander Vereen Luke, a member of Boy Scout Troop 26, achieved the rank of Eagle in September. Luke formally accepted the rank July 18 at Halyburton Park, where he had previously completed his Eagle Scout project. The ceremony was held under the leadership of Scoutmaster Dan Mahn.

  • Hurst celebrates 80th birthday

    O’Dell Hurst, better known as “The Legend of Shell Point Road,” according to his neighbors, celebrated his 80th birthday Aug. 17. He is famous for helping his neighbors fix anything and for just being fun.

  • McDonald graduates from basic military training

    Air Force National Guard Airman Breanna L. McDonald, daughter of Michael McDonald of Springfield, Ohio, and Sherrie Stevens of Ocean Isle Beach and stepdaughter of Natalie McDonald of Springfield, Ohio, graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio.

  • Coast artillery group plans 36th reunion

    Officers of the 252nd Coast Artillery/Anti-Aircraft Artillery Group Association, NC NG, in Wilmington have announced plans for its 36th annual reunion, scheduled for Friday, Sept. 18, and Saturday, Sept. 19, at Covil Farms Clubhouse on Covil Farm Road (off Military Cutoff) in Wilmington. All former members of the 252nd CA/AAA or any subordinate units are encouraged to attend.

  • Mitchem to compete in National American Miss Pageant

     Toni Mitchem, daughter of Micheal and Tonya Mitchem, has earned the opportunity to attend Nationals through her successfully scored events of second runner-up Miss Photogenic and N.C. state finalist at National American Miss N.C. Pageant. The National Pageant is to be held in Anaheim, Calif., at Disneyland during Thanksgiving week, representing the state of North Carolina and Brunswick County, where she will have the opportunity to win her share of over $500,000 in cash and prizes.

  • Chevers graduates from basic training

     Army Pfc. Akhiba D. Chevers, daughter of Mariel Swanson of Carolina Shores and sister of Teressa Chevers-Brumfield of Fayetteville, has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C.

  • Holland-King engagement

     Announcement is made of the forthcoming marriage of Caroline Cooper Holland and Taylor Jaye King, both of Raleigh. The bride-elect is the daughter of Mark and Milinda Holland of Ocean Isle Beach and Susie Holland of Raleigh. The prospective groom is the son of Russell King of Mills River and Dianne King of Flat Rock. A Jan. 30, 2016, wedding is planned at The Chapel at Saint Mary’s School in Raleigh.

  • Smith graduates from Army Reserve officer’s training

     Samantha A. Smith, a student at University of North Carolina at Charlotte, has graduated from the Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps Cadet Initial Entry Training at Fort Knox, Ky. She is the daughter of Laurie A. and stepdaughter of William D. Britt, and granddaughter of Thomas P. Smith, all of Ocean Isle Beach.

  • Jordan graduates from basic training

     Air Force Guard Airman 1st Class Victoria S. Jordan graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio.

    Jordan is the daughter of Lori S. and Jonathan K. Jordan of Supply, sister of Kaylie Jordan of Clayton, granddaughter of Darlene Sloop of Kannapolis and niece of Kim Nivens of Concord and Casey Collins of Calabash.

  • Sauls-Lennon engagement

    Announcement is made of the forthcoming marriage of Lindsay Chapman Sauls of Holden Beach and Dr. Charles Lloyd Lennon III of Holden Beach. The bride-elect is the daughter of Dixon and Kathryn Sauls of Farmville. The prospective groom is the son of Lloyd and Linda Lennon of Clarkton. A Nov. 28 wedding is planned at May-Lew Farm in Farmville.
