  • When did I see you? Many depend on the generosity of others

    The January meeting of the Greater Shallotte Ministerial Association began with a bang. It wasn’t the sound of a gavel calling all to order, nor a fireworks display that announced the beginning of a new year.
    It was a summons to discipleship given by two guest speakers. The message was not a novel one, but it was an entreaty begging for awareness and response. It was an appeal for us to open our eyes, ears, minds and hearts to the plight of the needy, from hungry schoolchildren to beleaguered seniors.

    Life groups are forming for everyone
    Freedom Outreach Center, 1790 Oxpen Road in Supply, is now organizing Life Groups for the first semester (January-April).
    Life Groups are for everyone, including young married couples with children, women, men, young adults, retirees or a mixture of people.
    A Life Group is a group of three to 15 people and can meet anywhere. It is particularly important with our busy lifestyles to make time with other believers to learn about God’s Word, pray, share a meal, or fellowship, organizers say.

  • Save Our Community has 20th Emancipation Day

    The Save Our Community (SOC) organization of Southport hosted its 20th annual Emancipation Day program at Mount Carmel AME Church on Dec. 31, 2011.
    Norman Jones, master of ceremonies, opened the program by asking the audience to sing “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Joshua Carter of Friendship Baptist read the Scripture (Exodus 3:7-12); Christina Brown of Friendship Baptist prayed; and DeMarcus Steward of Mount Carmel AME gave the welcome. Aljean Cromartie of First Baptist reviewed the five original objectives of the organization.

  • God’s prayer service is our spiritual global positioning system

    There have been many conversations in our household regarding the potential purchase of GPS to assist us on our various journeys around town and far away.
    We have heard the pros and cons. We have contemplated the need, vis-à-vis the “old fashioned” map reading, noting the “mayhem” component presented in the television ads offered by an insurance company was not helpful. It only identified the anxiety of technology gone awry.

    Trinity UMC plans Sunday services
    “Bullied” will be the title of the Rev. Jeff Roberts’ and associate pastor Michelle Sabin’s sermons on Sunday, Jan. 22, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 209 E. Nash St. in Southport.
    Four worship services will be available: a casual service at 8 a.m., contemporary services at 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. and a traditional service at 11 a.m. The 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. services in Murrow Hall will have music by Promise, the Trinity worship band.

  • Does life give us meaning or do we give meaning to life?

    “Life does not give us meaning. Life has only the meaning we give it,” from Happiness by Joan Chittister (Eerdmans). That statement stopped me in my tracks.
    I put down the paper I was reading and began to think about those words, to view them while considering my own life. The new year is in its early stages. I still have time to review and renew my understanding of life and the meaning I give it. I still have the opportunity to discern who I might be and become this year and what I might do differently, as a result.

  • To believe in the unbelievable is a testimony of trust

    Incredible! Awesome! Wonderful! Amazing! Wow! How often have we said, or heard, those words used to describe what we can scarcely believe? We use them to chronicle our view of a spectacular sunrise or sunset, to relate the first stirrings of life in a woman’s womb, to comment on the many experiences for which words seem inadequate.
