    When I was asked to read Susan Dehn Matthews book, “No Longer Silent: The Empowerment of Women in the Gospels,” I had no idea I would be embarking on a journey with a visionary and prophet. The trip is wild and wonderful, for those who wish to expand their comprehension of Scriptural vignettes beyond a literal translation and beyond a “reasonable” one.

    Church has revival
    Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church, 2000 Zion Hill Road in Bolivia, will have a revival Oct. 12-14 at 7:30 p.m. nightly. The Rev. Darryl Hardy of St. John MBC will be guest minister. His theme will be “But God” (Ephesians 2:4-6).
    Musical guests will perform each night, including: Wednesday, Zion Hill; Thursday, Pleasant Hill; Friday, St. John MBC of Chadbourn.
    Donations for the free winter giveaway are now being accepted. Drop-off box is at 2000 Zion Hill Road in Bolivia, behind the cafe.

    The media—print, radio and television—was flooded with coverage of the death of a brilliant man whose life was made ever more real in his death. I am a Macintosh fan, cannot say aficionado, since I rarely do more than word processing and emailing. Occasionally I’ll surf the net, but I do not possess an iPhone, iPad, iPod or any other Apple product. I’ve only taken a small bite out of the apple.

  • Beauty is in the ‘aye’ of the beholder

    Weeks have passed since I viewed the movie “The Help” and subsequently read the book. The content of both continues to plague me. I cannot get the characters out of my head. I relive the events daily, wondering what they and I have in common. Finally, it dawned on me. I had been repeating the marvelous words of affirmation given to a not-so-slim little girl who sensed her mother’s dismay, if not disapproval.

  • Save Our Community hosts Youth Bible Quiz Bowl

    SOC (Save Our Community) hosted its fourth Youth Bible Quiz Bowl on Sept. 10 at St. James AMEZ Church in Southport.
    The program opened with the song, “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Deacon Norman Jones served as master of ceremony; Robin Bernard (Friendship Baptist Church) read the scripture from Matthew 19:14-19; and TyQuan Brown (First Baptist Church) prayed.

    At best, life is a mystery to be celebrated. At worst, it is a problem to be solved. In either case, it is a topsy-turvy world of surprises. It is the experience of living with a God who is inscrutably transcendent. At the same time, this God holds out the ultimate promise of intimate presence. We read in Scripture: “I am the Savior of all peoples. Whatever their troubles, I will answer their cry, and I will always be their Lord.”

    Church plans fall festival
    Brunswick Island Baptist Church, 1672 Mount Pisgah Road, Supply, will have a fall festival from noon-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24.
    There will be a dunk tank, a rock wall, inflatables, midway games, free cotton candy and hot dogs. Several bands will perform throughout the afternoon and the youth group will have a fundraising bake sale.

  • Accept freedom of forgiveness or be bound in a prison of retaliation

    One ever said Christianity was an easy course to take. Nor has it been reported one who consistently and continually claims God as master has smoothly sailed through life. Probably the biggest obstacle in the path of all who would seek sanctity is the need to be eternally forgiving. Humanly, we ask for limits.
    Seven...70...70 times seven—let’s count it up and total the cost, sum up the payment due. Then we’ll be able to calculate risks, make decisions, and go on our way.
