  • Save Our Community has Emancipation Day event

    The Save Our Community (SOC) organization of Southport hosted its 19th annual Emancipation Day program at Friendship Baptist Church on Jan. 1.

    Norman Jones, master of ceremonies, opened the program by asking the audience to sing “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Pamela Ferguson of St. James AMEZ read the Scripture from Exodus 3:7-12. Norman Jones of New Hope Baptist prayed and Kyerra Kinsey of Friendship Baptist gave the welcome.

  • ‘The Gates of Hell: Rodin’s Passion in Stone’ is a real eye-opener

    Arline Boucher Tehan has aptly titled her book, “The Gates of Hell: Rodin’s Passion in Stone.” It is a detailed description of the life of an artist whose passion both emerged from and led to an anguish that was both hellish and heavenly. 

    His work may have been cast in stone, but its effect on him and the world was, and is, both alive and lively.

    Church to host soup cook-off

    The north area Coastal Samaritan Counseling Center’s second annual soup cook-off will be from 4-7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 9, in the Life Center at Little River United Methodist Church, 1629 U.S. 17 N in Little River, S.C.

    Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for children 4-12 years old and free for children younger than 3 years old.

  • Be it resolved that I am unresolved

    I am usually a decisive person. A classical “J” on the Myers Briggs indicator, I make and then check off lists of things I need to do should do and want to do. I am a happy camper when my list is complete and all deeds are done, but come New Year’s Day with its call for resolutions to be accomplished during the upcoming 12 months, I balk.

  • The whole world awaits Mary’s yes; it’s also our Christmas gift to a wounded world awaiting the birth of newness

    Many years ago, an abbot named Bernard of Clairvaux offered a homily in praise of the Virgin Mary. His presentation focused on the importance, the crucial nature, of Mary’s response and he positioned it within a framework of a waiting world, a universe living in anticipation of her response and hoping it will be a positive one.

    Free hot Christmas meal

    Faith Building Missions will pass out hot Christmas meals from noon-2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 25, in Rourk Gardens on Main Street in Shallotte.

    The group will also give away free socks while supplies last. The group is prepared to feed 2,000 people but it needs help with distribution, as they don’t have the capacity to deliver meals. 

    Anyone wishing to volunteer to deliver may call Dean Siler at 755-6888. Anyone in need of a free meal on Christmas Day is invited to attend.

  • Church launches ministry outreach programs

    Several months ago, members of St. James the Fisherman Episcopal Church in Shallotte began looking at ways to use an available room for outreach to the local community. Forming a committee to examine various methods, their work culminated in the establishment of a multi-faceted Neighbor To Neighbor Program.

    On a cold and blustery Dec. 7, they cut the ribbon to open the doors of this parish program that conducts three Community Outreach projects: Coat Closet, Orthopedic Equipment Lending Closet and a Benefit Bank.
