We’re nearly there. There’s a full-court press in the media urging folks to take advantage of deals and sales. It is an explicit and implicit statement that presents will somehow indicate presence. Gifts will be the overt expression of love. And, there is truth in it all...but not complete truth, not the fullness of reality. 

Yes, giving is good for the giver and the receiver. The question is what do we wish to give, to leave, to offer as a lasting memory of our connectedness to each other, our love for each other? 

Waiting is too hard to do. Yet, wait we do, on a daily basis. We wait for medical appointments. We wait in cashiers’ lines. We wait for delivery of purchases. We wait to heal from injuries and illnesses. We wait to hear good news and wait fearfully for the drop of the other shoe. We wait in anticipation as well as anxiety.

It’s true. I love hearing a good story. I love to tell a good story. If exaggeration will assist in the hearing and telling, I’ll use it; however, this is more than narrating a saga to regale an audience. It’s more than my causing amusement, laughter and distraction from our daily doings. It’s more than adding spice to a mundane routine. This is the stuff of life that causes one to stop, really stop and smell the roses in our everyday bouquet of life.

Giving market set for Nov. 21

Calabash Presbyterian Church on Georgetown Road in Calabash will host its annual Alternative Giving Market from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, and from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21.

Buy a gift of a farm animal such as a yak or a goat or a flock of chickens to provide a renewable food supply, or help a child by giving them the chance they need in a third-world country.
