  • Scripture is filled with promises for people whose faith is powerfully credible

    When I read the words quoted in the Gospel according to John, I am blown away with their potency. It is not a matter of lacking faith or hope or charity. It concerns the human effort to believe in promises since we are a people who seem more in tune with breaking promises than with keeping them.

    We have journeyed together through Lenten’s unique suffering to engage in the wonder of Easter resurrection. The joys and sorrows intermixed. We entered a renewed transformation. The danger is to relax, call it another year’s venture and go back to life as usual.

    Life has taken many a twisted turn since the beginning of my bout with a variety of major health issues, particularly in the past two years.
    Frustration, a degree of desperation, fear...terrible fear...and an assault on what now appeared to be quite fragile faith. Unknowingly, I had entered the dark night of the soul. It was not a conscious choice, but it surely was one that dramatically changed my life.

    Camp UMC plans Easter services
    Easter celebrations begin at Camp United Methodist Church of Shallotte on Sunday, April 24, with a 6:30 a.m. Sunrise Service. The Rev. Richard Vaughan will preach on “He Saw and He Believed” from John 20:1-8.
    The 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. services will be taken from Matthew 28:1-8 with a sermon titled “Ta Da!” All services will be in the sanctuary.

    Camp meeting starts April 17
    The Sonrise Independent Baptist Church and members will be hosting their second annual old-fashioned camp meeting in Southport April 17-21.
    The old-fashioned camp meeting was started for the “preachin’, practicin’ and promotin’” of old-time religion. Come and experience some old-fashioned preaching and gospel singing. Don’t miss out on the morning or evening sessions.
    Lunch will be provided after the morning sessions and dinner provided before the evening sessions in the church fellowship hall.
