  • Brunswick County is called to take care of our own

    I am not an advocate of early morning meetings. I understand their necessity for those who are working or have heavy schedules, but I am simply less than functional in the early hours of the day.
    So, it was with some degree of reluctance, if not mixed emotions, that I accepted an invitation for Hubby Dear and me to attend a breakfast event hosted by Brunswick Family Assistance.
    H.D. asked his usual questions: “Why were we invited?” “What’s it all about, anyway?” “Who’s going to be there?”

  • Students compete in Bible Quiz Bowl

    SOC (Save Our Community) conducted its fifth Youth Bible Quiz Bowl on Sept. 29 at First Baptist Church in Southport. The program opened with the song, “Lift Every Voice and Sing” with deacon Norman Jones serving as master of ceremonies.

    Coat closet to open Oct. 23, seeks coats
    The St. James the Fisherman Episcopal Church’s Neighbor to Neighbor Coat Closet Outreach program will open Tuesday,
    Oct. 23. Hours will be from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesdays and Saturdays.
    Donations of warm, gently used adult and children’s coats will be accepted. Vouchers will be needed in order to receive a coat. Make arrangements by calling the church office at 754-9313.

  • To be unbroken, one must first experience brokenness

    Hubby Dear gasped as he watched me turn page after page of Lauren Hillebrand’s book, “Unbroken.”
    My interest was unending and consuming. I had enjoyed her first work, “Seabiscuit,” but this one had me spellbound and deeply saddened. I was totally unaware of the atrocities endured by the POWs during World War II. My respect for and admiration of the veterans of that, and other wars, deepened exponentially.

    Fall festival is Oct. 20
    Sonrise Baptist Church, 8375 River Road SE in Southport, will have its fall festival from 2-5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20. It will be a day of fun for the whole family, filled with games, prizes, food, hayrides, a cakewalk and a moonwalk with a slide.
    Bethel homecoming planned for Oct. 14
    Bethel United Methodist Church in Bolivia will have its annual homecoming on Sunday, Oct. 14, beginning with special services and music at 11 a.m. The Rev. Mark Murphy is pastor. Food and fellowship will follow the services.

  • As we become ‘hearing-impaired,’ to listen is to be silent

    We were chattering away, enjoying each other’s company and eager to share news, views, opinions, challenges and comfort. It was our weekly meeting to search the Scriptures for the word, or words, God had for each of us.
    The session was to begin with prayer at 9:30 in the morning. It never did. Always, there was the pre-study gathering time, time to renew ourselves as we reviewed the events of the previous week. We arrived separately to become community. We needed time and space before we could gather ourselves into the uniqueness of the group.

  • Needlers donate quilts

    Saint Peter Needlers from Saint Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in Southport recently donated 10 large lap quilts they had knitted and crocheted for patients at Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCareCenter SECU Hospice House of Brunswick.
    In 2007, the Needlers (Liz Villadsen, Irene Hennessey and Lois Beddard) began knitting and crocheting squares to make lap robes or lapghans for organizations that help others.

    Lobster sale is Oct. 20
    St. James the Fisherman Episcopal Church will have its 22nd annual lobster sale on Saturday, Oct. 20. The lobsters are shipped directly from Maine and arrive the morning of the sale. Lobsters will be sold live, cooked or in boxes of frozen tails.
    As in previous years, lobsters must be ordered in advance. Prices are lower this year due to a higher-than-average catch. Order forms may be picked up at the church at 4941 Main St. in Shallotte, or they may be requested by calling the church at 754-9313.

  • Celebration supports projects for the needy

    A Celebration of God’s Abundance took place on Sept. 23 at Saint Luke Lutheran Church in Ocean Isle Beach.
    The morning started when the Rev. Roy A Maack, a guest preacher from the Food for the Poor ministry, a gospel-based ministry that serves the poorest of the poor in 16 Latin American countries by raising orphans in Christian homes, digging wells, building homes, feeding the hungry and helping the elderly.
    His sermon was followed by a light lunch, giving everyone the opportunity to support a free-will offering that will be given to his ministry.
