  • Surely the presence of the Lord is in this place

Congregational chatter in the sanctuary before the dedication began indicated the delight of God’s people in their new place. The excitement rose by degrees as folks entered pews, smiling welcome and receiving greetings in turn.

  • The church was alive with the sound of music

It had rained with biblical proportions for days. Roads were washed out...yards were flooded. Pools of standing rain could be seen everywhere. Local meteorologists repeatedly urged people to refrain from using the highways and byways. The clarion call was “stay home.” However, a workshop and concert offered by an internationally renowned musician, liturgist and songwriter had long been planned and organized.

  • Who is waiting at the gate of our affluence?

Whenever I read the prophet Amos, especially in company with the story of the rich man and Lazarus told in the gospel according to Luke, I am overwhelmed with emotion. Sadness competes with guilt; denial with disgust. It is all too clear to me I am the rich one who is being referenced. My dress may not be splendid nor colored purple, but I want for nothing. Some, especially my husband, would say that my meals are not visual feasts; however they are both filling and abundant.
