In a world of turmoil and chaos, we want simple solutions. We want an ordered, peaceful life. This is especially true for those of us who have reached the pinnacle of middle age and are heading downhill, perhaps too quickly. Having already lived through and with crises, we are eager for stability. Opportunities for change are irksome to say the least and odious at our worst.

There was a special note of appreciation since we had just come through a world war, a major life-changing event in my young life. Too young to serve in the military, we were yet called to serve in whatever way we could. Mostly, it was serving by sacrifice.

  • There is a universe of wonder dwelling in little things

The event occurred many years ago, when I was a graduate student immersed in the large universe of theological thoughts and historical ramifications; however, the incident remains as vivid to me today as it was then.

Accompanied by a dear friend, I was strolling to the college cafeteria. It had rained hard all day and we were walking in the midst of a superfine drizzle that was dampening my spirits. I fare well in sunny weather and am a bear when the skies darken and grayness falls upon the earth.

The desire to make a difference for the youth of Haiti led one local church to break out sewing machines.
