  • Ordinary people live valorous, extraordinary lives

    Recently, I read Scott Turow’s novel, “Reversible Errors.” It’s not a book I found especially interesting, but one I labored to finish nonetheless. I am always certain there is some redemptive value, some phrase or thought that will provide fodder for meditation.
    Voila, I read a sentence that struck me. “People don’t think much about the valor of ordinary lives.”

  • Duo to entertain at summer music series

    The duo of Frank Bongiorno on alto saxophone and Robert Nathanson on classical guitar will perform as part of the St. Philip’s Summer Music Series in the sanctuary of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, 205 East Moore St. in Southport, at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 17. The concert is free and the public is invited.

    Crystal Spring Missionary Baptist Church, 4754 Blue Banks Loop Road in Leland, will host its annual Vacation Bible School from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 13, through Friday, June 15. Its goal is to reach the community, especially the youth, through Christian education and daily life experiences. Activities are planned for all ages.

Farewell was not in their present vocabulary. Yet, go he must. Finances were tight. His decision was based on economy, not desire.

    May 24 blood drive is from 1:30-6 p.m.
    The American Red Cross blood drive sponsored by Seaside United Methodist Church scheduled on Thursday, May 24, has changed its hours of operation. The drive will now operate from 1:30-6 p.m.
    Anyone at least 17 years of age, or 16 years of age accompanied by a parent, and weighing a minimum of 110 pounds and in general good health, is eligible to donate. Donors must also bring a form of ID in order to donate. Donors of all blood types are needed.

  • It is true we find our way walking on ‘The Way’

    What might I do on a Thursday morning after a week filled with commitments? The answer came easily and speedily. Go to the movies...well, go to the church to join a group of folks to watch and then discuss a DVD. The choice became a treasure as I traveled mentally with Dr. Tom Avery, an ophthalmologist played by Martin Sheen in the movie, “The Way.”

    Life groups study God’s word
    Life Groups are for everyone. Freedom Outreach Center has Life Groups for children, women, men, young adults, retirees, a mixture of people and the list goes on. A Life Group is a group of 3-15 people, and can meet anywhere.
    The following Life Groups are presently organized: The Mulligans (a golf Life Group); Going Deeper Divas (women’s Bible study); Pastor Ken’s Life Group, which constantly changes; and Bodies 4 God (exercise to Christian music).

  • Life and death are entwined at Ocean Isle Beach

    Dawn arrived clothed in a blanket of gray clouds and threatening skies. I wondered if the memorial service at Ocean Isle Beach would still happen.
    The question lingered in my mind as sadness gripped me. I wanted to cry, but couldn’t. I wished I had known the young woman who had died, but I didn’t. I only knew her mom. Sorrow at her loss gripped me though my tears remained unshed. Rain or shine, beach or church, Hubby Dear and I could do nothing but be present as companions at this time of unique heartache and grief.
