    Operation Inasmuch set for April 19

    On April 19, 12 Baptist churches in Brunswick County will join with hundreds of other churches across North Carolina in a statewide Operation Inasmuch Day, according to a news release.

    Volunteers from all over the state will work together to provide assistance to those in need, including: working at food pantries, building wheelchair ramps, handyman repairs, care packages for soldiers and their families and taking blankets to nursing homes.

  • Keep the inner eye focused on goodness

    Those who know me well also know I love to tease, especially to tease those who are near and dear to me.

    Obviously, my husband is the most frequent recipient of my jesting comments. I exaggerate the effects of his contemplative nature, describing in great detail his many prayer chairs and their many accompanying books. I wonder aloud at the procrastination that emerges from hours spent in pondering rather than in practicality, but all the while, part of me is watching the power of that prayerfulness. I am being impelled to a similar lifestyle, even if I express it differently.

    7 Up's service planned at Big Macedonia Baptist

    Members of the Big Macedonia Baptist Church are planning a 7 Up’s service for 3 p.m. Sunday, April 6.

    The theme will be “Standing for Jesus in any Situation.”

    Speakers for the afternoon will be: Stand Up-Minister Edna Lewis; Speak Up-Sister Yolonda Hewett; Grow Up-Brother Kendrick Morgan; Look Up-Minister Norma Frink; Pray Up-Deacon Jimmy Hankins; Wake Up-Deacon Gregory Williams; Shut Up-Sister Shelia Washington; and Sister Stephanie Marlow will wrap it up.

    One of the most difficult tasks placed before humanity is the labor of forgiving. It is work. It is hard work. It rends the heart so healing can happen. How do I know this truth? I know it because I have experienced it. The words, “I forgive you” have not come easily to my lips; nor has my request to be forgiven! Sometimes, it is easier to say, “I’m sorry,” than it is to ask to be forgiven.

  • Good Friday's cry is 'Come, passion!'

    The Lenten journey is drawing to a close, a crucial ending that will evoke new beginnings.

    The official name for what is traditionally known as Good Friday is Friday of the Passion and Death of the Lord. It is a day of mourning, a day to contemplate prayerfully the cross as a sign of Jesus’ willingness to die that all of us might be saved.

    There is an obvious solemnity and somberness to this time, but it is not simply a remembrance of a past phenomenon. It is not only a commemoration of a 2,000 year-old incident.

    Easter musical/drama set for March 21-23

    “The First Time I Saw Jesus,” an Easter musical and drama, will be presented by Ocean View Baptist Church, 7025 Beach Drive SW in Ocean Isle Beach, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March 21, 22 and 23.

    Friday and Saturday’s performances will begin at 7 p.m.

    Sunday’s performance starts at 11 a.m.

    Calvary sets Easter celebration

    The Calvary Baptist Church choir will present a celebration of the resurrection, “The Risen Christ,” at the 11 a.m. worship hour on Easter Sunday, March 23.

  • Lent, like life, is a journey into the unknown

    “This is a journey, and each one travels differently.” Thus spoke the ophthalmologist to his impatient patient, a man chomping at the bit to return to “normalcy.”

    The doctor quietly but firmly repeated his message, adding that everyone heals differently. Each lens implant adheres uniquely, conforming to the individual shape of the eye. His lesson was clear. The voyage toward improved vision may be walked together, but each voyager experiences it personally and, in a sense, alone.
