  • Dominique Vereen and Michael Thomasen of Carolina Shores are the proud parents of a daughter, Adrianna Marie Thomasen, born at 2:10 p.m. Feb. 12 at Brunswick Novant Medical Center weighing nine pounds, 10 ounces and measuring 22 inches long.
    She joins a brother, Tayveon, 8.
    Maternal grandparents are Clifton and Rosa Vereen of Ash.
    Paternal grandparents are Michael and JoAnn Thomasen of Supply.

  • Don’t be tardy to the Patty parties or forget to wear green.

    An array of St. Patrick’s Day events is scheduled in the region this weekend.

    St. Patrick’s Day festivities are planned Saturday and Sunday at Fibber McGees Irish Pub, 1780-1 Queen Anne St. in Sunset Beach.

    Festivities start at noon with three bands performing each day and food and drink specials, including corned beef and cabbage, Irish stew and shepherd’s pie.

    Free T-shirts will be given to the first 100 people in the door on Sunday, March 17.

  • ABBA fans can catch ABBA-Mania Thursday night.

    That’s when “ABBA-Mania” is coming to the stage of Odell Williamson Auditorium at Brunswick Community College.

    The live rock musical is designed to take the audience back to the popular era of the Swedish pop band, renowned for hits like “Dancing Queen,” “Take A Chance On Me,” “Waterloo” and “Fernando.”

  • NARFE to meet March 12
    The National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) Association, Brunswick County Chapter 1894, will meet at noon Tuesday, March 12, at The Dead End Saloon Fish Factory Grill, 4907 Fish Factory Road, South Harbor Village, in Southport.

  • Brunswick County has received a state Eat Smart, Move More N.C. Community Grant to fund local healthy eating and physical activity projects in 2012-13. Additional project partners include the Obesity Prevention Initiative at UNCW, the Brunswick County Health Department, the Wilmington Metropolitan Planning Organization and the town of Navassa.
    The grant will fund play structures and equipment for Phoenix Park, which currently has no infrastructure to encourage physical activity.

  • “Celebrating the Revolution of Responsibility” was the theme for the North Carolina 4-H Volunteer Leaders’ Conference in Raleigh Feb. 8-10. More than 250 4-H volunteer leaders from across North Carolina participated in the conference.
    Brunswick County 4-H volunteer Grace Wrigley attended the educational workshops and received the southeast district’s Volunteer of the Year award.

  • The home canning season isn’t really that far away. If you’re thinking about “putting food up” this summer, this is a great time to learn more, before the busy time gets here.
    As a friend of mine who is a food safety specialist says, “Home canning isn’t rocket science, but it does require time and effort. And it must be done properly to ensure safety.”
    People have been preserving food for centuries in an effort to keep food from a time of plenty for a time of need.

  • Jubilee and fish fry set for March 8
    Center Point Church (formerly Mt. Gilead Baptist Church), 5420 U.S. 17 in Winnabow, will host a Brunswick Gospel Jubilee and fish fry on Friday, March 8.
