  • SUNSET BEACH—Jim Williams shows a black-and-white photo of a small group of children standing outside a small schoolhouse.

That’s a picture taken of him when he was in the third grade back in Pennsylvania, he said.

The Sunset Beach resident keeps it on hand to remind him how far he’s come since his early, humble beginnings at the one-room school near Ligonier, Pa., about 60 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

  • In his 83 years of living, Miller Pope has grown up feisty and adventurous in the South, earned a living and hobnobbed with the upper echelon in the North, and published a book to tell all about it.

The longtime Ocean Isle Beach artist, entrepreneur and writer has commemorated his multi-faceted life in his latest book, “Confessions of a MadMan: From Madison Avenue to Island Sands,” available at local bookstores and online.

Though most of his books are heavy-laden with his art, especially about pirates, this one is a little different.

  • The tourists are fewer, the pace is slower, but many area artists still visit Southport in the quiet winter months.
Franklin Square Gallery is a hub of artistic activity, with an array of classes and workshops for both beginners and professionals. Painters and potters from Wilmington and throughout Brunswick County travel to Southport to participate.

  • The January meeting of the Greater Shallotte Ministerial Association began with a bang. It wasn’t the sound of a gavel calling all to order, nor a fireworks display that announced the beginning of a new year.
It was a summons to discipleship given by two guest speakers. The message was not a novel one, but it was an entreaty begging for awareness and response. It was an appeal for us to open our eyes, ears, minds and hearts to the plight of the needy, from hungry schoolchildren to beleaguered seniors.

  • Life groups are forming for everyone
Freedom Outreach Center, 1790 Oxpen Road in Supply, is now organizing Life Groups for the first semester (January-April).
Life Groups are for everyone, including young married couples with children, women, men, young adults, retirees or a mixture of people.
A Life Group is a group of three to 15 people and can meet anywhere. It is particularly important with our busy lifestyles to make time with other believers to learn about God’s Word, pray, share a meal, or fellowship, organizers say.

  • The Southport-Oak Island Kiwanis Club celebrated 18 years of service to children of Brunswick County at its annual Charter Night banquet at the Southport Community Center.
