  • SHALLOTTE—Heather Menzel, a U.S. History teacher at South Brunswick High School from Shallotte, was a contestant on last Wednesday’s episode of “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.” 

    Menzel made it all the way up to the $250,000 question.

    She successfully navigated her way through round one of the game (questions 1-10) and went on to round two (questions 11-14) with an accumulated “Millionaire” bank of $68,500. She had one lifeline left.

  • Craft fair is Dec. 3
    Women of the Moose of the Shallotte Moose Lodge, 253 Holden Beach Road, are sponsoring a craft fair, featuring a soup and cookie walk, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3. Proceeds will benefit Community Services of Brunswick County.
    Many types of soups and cookies will be available for sale to eat in or take out. Table rental is $15/table with one item being donated from each merchant to go toward a Women of the Moose raffle. For table reservations, call Eileen Childers at 755-6994.

  • Church to host clothing giveaway
    Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church will host a free winter giveaway of new clothes and gently used items from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, at 2000 Zion Hill Road in Bolivia. Refreshments will be served.

  • This has been quite a busy a year for the small congregation at St. Paul’s by the Sea Anglican Church.
    Presiding Bishop Scott McLaughlin, Primate of the Orthodox Anglican Communion and Archbishop of the Orthodox Anglican Church, came for a visit April 16 and two children, Clara and Anna Tyson, daughters of Deacon Mac Tyson and Beth Tyson, were confirmed.

  • Have you ever had a tune pop into your head and stay there, humming its way into your brain and psyche with relentless ardor? Have you ever been inundated with the memories the song elicited? Well, I have.
    Suddenly, without invitation, the lyrics to a poignant song from “West Side Story” burst into my consciousness and would not leave me alone. Unable to recall all the words, I Googled my way to the site that gave me the information. Then came the memories.

    By the time most of you are reading this, another Thanksgiving dinner will be just a memory, photos posted on Facebook and a sad looking turkey carcass chilling out in the refrigerator.
    It’s all over but the leftovers, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to forget about food safety. While overindulging can cause an upset stomach, so can eating food that was improperly handled or stored.

  • Eight members of the Merry Gold Gardeners Junior Master Gardeners 4H Club have received the Golden Ray Certification for Growing a Vegetable Garden. Led by Grace Wrigley and Mercy McCurdy, certified Master Gardeners, the club meets at Supply Elementary School during the school year to learn more about gardening and the environment.

    As individuals, we can help bees in a number of ways: plant flowers that bees love, stop using pesticides, and, become beekeepers. Cross-pollination by bees helps at least 30 percent of the world’s crops and 90 percent of wild plants to thrive. Without bees, many plants, including food crops, would die off.
