  • Mole problems seem to be on the rise. Tunnels and more tunnels everywhere you turn, what can be done? How can we control these critters? First, we must be sure it is indeed a mole and not a vole.

    Here are lunch menus for Brunswick County’s seven Senior Nutrition Sites for next week.
    Monday, Feb. 6
    Pot roast/gravy, mashed potatoes, okra/tomatoes, fresh orange, dinner roll/whole-wheat roll, beverage.
    Tuesday, Feb. 7
    Fried chicken filet/gravy, brown rice, green beans, orange juice, fresh apple, cake with icing, biscuits/whole-wheat bread, beverage.
    Wednesday, Feb. 8
    Pork roast/gravy, mashed sweet potatoes, turnip greens, pineapple tidbits, dinner roll/whole-wheat roll, beverage.

  • SUNSET BEACH—A day of fellowship and faith dedicated to only women is in the works at Seaside United Methodist Church.

    The church’s women’s group is preparing for the 4th annual Women’s Day by the Sea, a spiritual event for women. This year for the first time organizers are not only from Seaside UMC.

  • If you’re in the mood for something different but don’t really want to go out to eat, you can’t go wrong with some delicious Thai chicken satay served on skewers with your own homemade peanut dipping sauce.
    This dish is easy and takes less than an hour to prep and cook. Strips of chicken, beef or pork are marinated in an easy-to-make Thai marinade, and then skewered and grilled or broiled in the oven. The skewered meat is then served with your own homemade peanut sauce for the ultimate taste sensation. Satay also makes for a terrific party food.

  • Announcement is made of the forthcoming marriage of Jessica Anne Lewis of Shallotte and Michael Kristopher Lancaster of Varnamtown. The bride-elect is the daughter of Alan and Tammie Lewis of Shallotte. The prospective groom is the son of Chris and Margaret Lancaster of Varnamtown. A May 19 wedding is planned at Camp United Methodist Church in Shallotte, followed by a reception at Brick Landing Plantation Golf Club in Ocean Isle Beach.

  • Announcement is made of the forthcoming marriage of Carlin Marie Creech and Bradley Thomas Smith, both of Raleigh. The bride-elect is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Creech of Fayetteville. The prospective groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Gordon Smith of Shallotte. A May 19 wedding is planned at Haymount United Methodist Church in Fayetteville.

  • Lizzie J. Harrell, PhD,  (ABMM), associate director of clinical microbiology and research professor of molecular genetics and microbiology, and pathology, recently retired after 33 years of service at Duke University Medical Center.
