  • Anyone interested in checking out the hot new color for fall hasn’t had to look any farther than Brunswick County this month.

    Firefighters, hair, even a cat’s collar are sporting the hot hue of pink in tribute and observance of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

    In addition to visits by Kayla the pink fire engine, several local fire departments have agreed to wear pink T-shirts during October, proving that real firefighters wear pink and can look hot doing so.

  • Silver Coast Winery will host an art competition for the creation of its newest wine label.

    The next addition to the winery’s extensive collection will be an oak-aged port wine hand-crafted in true Mediterranean style. 

    Following in the footsteps of its five-time Double Gold-winning Touriga (Cape Fear Blood Wine), Dana Keeler, winemaker at Silver Coast, said, “This port will exemplify and harness the distinct character of this unusual varietal.” 

  • The Calabash Elks will host a Halloween costume dinner and dance fundraiser from 6-10 p.m.

    This year’s menu is a choice of either prime rib or chicken cordon bleu. Entertainment will be provided by Hot and Heavy in full Halloween regalia.  Cost is $15 per person and reservations are required. Seating is limited. Call 579-4600.

  • Church plans yard sale

    Beach Assembly of God Church will host a yard sale at Jerome’s Steak and Seafood in Shallotte from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23. Barbecue plates will also be available.

    Space is still available to rent for the yard sale or for business. Call 575-5888.

  • President Obama claims change as his policy for and promise to our nation. The seasons change quarterly. With incredible rapidity, impending drought changes to hazardous flood conditions. Election time draws near. Candidates cry out for change. Change governmental strategies, change political parties, change your voting process. Change and choose differently.

  • Nature is filled with “good bugs,” crawling and flying creatures whose diet consists mainly of the pests that ravage garden plants. Below is a list of those good bugs and the plants that they like to visit for food and shelter. Intersperse these plants among the “problem pest areas” in your yard. Remember, though, many chemical sprays work on both bad and good bugs. To keep the good bugs in your yard, eliminate insecticide use in the areas where they live and work.

  • Plants from the genus Osmanthus are great large, evergreen shrubs to add to your landscape. Give them a bit of room and they’ll reward you with dark green foliage and tiny white flowers that will perfume your garden. In our area, consider Fragrant Tea Olive (Osmanthus fragrans), Holly Tea Olive (Osmanthus heterophyllus) and Fortune’s Osmanthus (Osmanthus x fortunei).

  • Charity walk for hospital

    There will be a charity walk to benefit Duke Children’s Hospital on Saturday, Oct. 23. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Shallotte Point Volunteer Fire Department.

    Donations are $10 to walk or $20 to walk that includes a T-shirt. There will be a silent auction, raffle and classic car display from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at Inlet View Restaurant.

  • This is a great time of the year to use our outdoor grills for everything from steak to chicken to pork to fish to vegetables and even certain fruits.

    While most of us enjoy grilling, we tend to ignore all the various sauces that can really enhance the flavor and aroma of our burgers and steaks. If cooking a filet mignon, why not liven it up with a spicy mustard and caper sauce? Or how about a beef tenderloin with blue cheese sauce? One of my favorites is sliced porterhouse with a garlic butter sauce.
