  • Air Force Airman Shaquan D. Graham, son of Shawnta D. Graham and grandson of Iris D. Jacobs of Leland, graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in Texas.

    Graham completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

    Sir Richard Branson says, “If your dreams don’t scare you, they’re too small.”

    That quote got me thinking about the risk/reward ratio of our behaviors. If there’s something that’s been tugging at you and you keep ignoring it, maybe you’re playing too safe in your life.

    Of course, there are lots of valid reasons to pull back. If you find you’re continually doing this, though, it may be time to redefine your dream. Or get off the fence. 

  • Each fall I usually get one or two phone calls concerning autumn foliage, with the callers wondering, invariably, if this season’s coloration will be better (or worse) than last fall.

    It’s a good question, but one that is basically impossible to answer, of course. There is no way of measuring beauty. That’s my normal response. And even in a drought period, you never know exactly how the resultant fall foliage may be affected. I think, also, that the amount of light available during the day has a real effect on autumnal foliage.

  • I recently read an article by Carolyn Gregoire in which she proclaimed the value of silence. In our house, quiet reigns supreme. It’s not that Hubby Dear and I never talk. More to the point, it is about giving ourselves time to be still and know the presence of divinity in our midst. Even more so, it is allowing ourselves to be quiet in the presence so that we can experience it everywhere and in everyone.

    If your cupboards are looking bare but you have a bag of potatoes in the house, here are some delicious options that can make filling dishes and add flair to your meals. While plain cooked potatoes may seem bland, try adding your favorite condiments, toppings and flavorings to get the taste your want.

    Baked potato skins (see recipe below) with chives, bacon and sour cream offer a great introduction to any meal. The addition of cheese, salsa or mushrooms will provide even more flavors to enhance this popular hors d’oeuvre.

  • OK, admit it. You watch cooking shows and say to yourself “I could do that.” You can!

    Or perhaps you really like to cook and would like to share those skills with others. You can!

     

    If you like cooking, eating, local food work or just simply food, volunteering for the Extension may be just the opportunity you’ve been looking for. I’m talking about the Extension Master Food Volunteer (EMFV) program. Applications are due now, but training won’t start until after the new year.

  • Ginny is the latest canine addition to the Ward family. As soon as she joined our pack, she became very attracted to the whole foods dished in her bowl. She’d been raised exclusively on kibble, and these fresh textures, tastes and smells were enticing. Carrots, apple slices and cooked beans quickly became some of her favorites.

  • Donate a new, unwrapped toy for Toys For Tots through Dec. 15 and receive one free round-trip Dial-a-Ride from Brunswick Transit System.

    Round-trip ride must be scheduled within Brunswick County and scheduled 48 hours in advance. Free Dial-A-Ride has no cash value.

    Toys can be dropped off at the Brunswick Transit System office or given to one of its drivers.

  • Thanksgiving has come and gone, so it’s time to start baking. And remember, Christmas cookies don’t have any calories, so you can bake up as many batches as you want!

    The Christmas holiday season means cookies… lots of cookies! It’s time to start thinking about what cookies to bake for your family, for gifts and for just munching while wrapping all those holiday presents.
