Twenty-three-year-old Melissa Kay Thatcher, who was four months pregnant, her 3-year-old son, Caleb Andrew Rankin, and her husband, 22-year-old Keith James Thatcher, perished in a fire that destroyed their singlewide mobile home off Sims Trail near the Holden Beach Causeway on Monday morning, March 2. Melissa Thatcher’s brother, escaped through a side window and is being treated for “multiple burns” at Grand Strand Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Fire that killed four people ruled accidental

The March 2 fire that killed four people and injured a fifth was caused by a heater that was left too close to combustible materials, Brunswick County Fire Marshal Scott Garner said in a news release Wednesday night.

Brunswick County Deputy Coroner Dave Crocker identified the victims as 23-year-old Melissa Kay Thatcher, who was four months pregnant, her 3-year-old son, Caleb Andrew Rankin, and her husband, 22-year-old Keith James Thatcher.
