    Jessica Scott, 26, of Ash, died Tuesday, March 1, 2011, at MCG Health Medical Center in Augusta, Ga.

    A funeral service was Sunday, March 6, at Peoples Funeral Home of Shallotte Inc.

    Lebraska Pate, formerly of Supply, died Thursday, March 3, 2011, in New York. 

    A funeral service is set for 1 p.m. Saturday, March 12, at Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Supply. Burial will follow at Riley Hewett Cemetery in Supply.

  • Elizabeth Nides

    Elizabeth Ennis Nides, 93, of Southport, died Sunday, March 6, 2011, at Dosher Memorial Hospital in Southport due to complications of pneumonia.

    She was born October 17, 1917, in Parsonsburg, Md., a daughter of the late Lawrence and Florence Baker Ennis. 

    Survivors include her daughter, Pam Foertsch and husband Bill of Holden Beach; two grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.

    A memorial service is set at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 19, at Holden Beach Chapel. Dr. John Gray will officiate.

  • George Mercer

    George Mercer of Supply died Thursday, March 3, 2011, at home. 

    A funeral service was set for 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, at Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Supply. Burial was set to follow at Riley Hewett cemetery in Supply.

  • Alice Martin

    Alice Ruth Martin, 86, of Southport, died Friday, March 4, 2011, at Dosher Memorial Hospital in Southport. 

    She was born May 14, 1924, in Catawba County, a daughter of the late Joe and Estell Hartsoe Martin. 

    Survivors include three sons; Stephen Martin of Charlotte, Randy Martin of Hickory, and Sam Martin of Southport; a daughter, Debbie Barksdale of Southport; a sister, Kat Whitner of Bethlehem; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

  • Martha Ketring

    Martha Allene Ketring, 76, died Friday, March 4, 2011, at Franklin Regional Hospital.

    She was born in Searcy, Ark., a daughter of the late Ruby Clark Brinds and William Brinds.

    Mrs. Ketring was a retired registered nurse from Wake Medical Center and a member of the Red Hat Society. She served on the Holden Beach Beautification Committee and was a former member of the Holden Beach Board of Adjustment.

    Funeral services were Tuesday, March 8, in the chapel of Bright Funeral Home. Burial followed in Pine Forest Memorial Gardens.

  • Donald ‘Buddy’ Kelly

    Donald C. “Buddy” Kelly, 64, mayor of Shallotte, died Wednesday, March 2, 2011, in the New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

    Mr. Kelly was born Sept. 26, 1946, in Ash, to the late Wilbur and Dorothy Babson Kelly. 

    He was an United States Army veteran. He was retired from DuPont after 30 years of service. 

  • Marsha Hewett

    Marsha Kay Hewett, 56, of Supply, died Wednesday, March 2, 2011, at her residence. 

    She was born on Sept. 25, 1954, a daughter of Trubie E. Hewett of Supply and the late Lillie Fulford Hewett. 

    Surviving in addition to her father are a daughter, Misty Robinson of the home; two sisters, Mary Hewett Simmons of Holden Beach, and Regina H. McHenry of Shallotte; four grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. 

  • Gene Grainger

    Gene Arthur Grainger, 70, of Shallotte, died Wednesday, March 2, 2011, at his home.

    He was born on Nov. 27, 1940, in Tabor City, a son of the late Soldier Berry and Nevada Strickland Grainger. 

    He was a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran.

  • Alfred D’Aquilla

    Alfred D’Aquilla, 80, of Carolina Shores, died Friday, March 4, 2011, at his home.

    He was born April 26, 1930, in the Bronx, N.Y., a son of the late Guisieppe and Concetta Morrella D’Aquilla. He was a United States Air Force veteran.
