  • Leone opens new restaurant at Ocean Isle Beach

    The menu for Antonio’s Deli, Pizza and Grill promises “Italian food from ‘Mama Leone’s’ kitchen.”

    While it might not be the famous Mama Leone of Food Network fame, Antonio’s owner Joe Leone promises the food will be good. Using his mother’s home cooking and his father’s name, he plans to bring a little taste of Italy to Ocean Isle Beach.

  • McLeod Loris Seacoast recognizes staff

    McLeod Loris Seacoast has announced the latest employees to be named Merit Award recipients. Staff members honored were Carol Richardson, nutrition services supervisor at McLeod Loris; Michelle Szabo, a physical therapist at McLeod Seacoast; and Meagan Barnes, a nurse at McLeod Seacoast. These employees were each presented with a merit award during a recognition event at the Center for Health & Fitness.

  • ATMC supports county youth groups

    Atlantic Telephone Membership Cooperative recently presented three local organizations with funds to enable disadvantaged youth to participate in programs that teach life skills and encourage physical activity.
    Organizations receiving the funds were Brunswick County Parks and Recreation, First Tee of Brunswick County and Girls on the Run (GOTR)/STRIDE.
    Funds totaling $7,000 were made available through ATMC Cable’s affiliation with Fox Sports Carolinas and will be used for financial assistance for youth participants in their programs over the next year.

  • ICF Builder Awards presented

    The ICF Builder Awards annually recognizes the best in insulated concrete construction. They are the project-of-the-year competition for the insulated concrete form (ICF) industry, and showcase the innovation, quality and craftsmanship possible with this construction method.
    This year’s contest attracted more than 50 entries, including a 76-home residential development in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the nation’s first net-zero energy school in Kentucky, police and fire stations, and residential projects of every shape, size and style.

  • Ocean Isle Beach will soon be featured on national TV

    OCEAN ISLE BEACH—Mayor Debbie Smith unveiled the town’s video Tuesday that will appear on Terry Bradshaw’s “Today in America” show.

    “Let’s take a look at a town its citizens are proud to call home—Ocean Isle Beach,” Bradshaw says as the video begins.

    The video highlights Ocean Isle Beach’s natural beauty and laid-back lifestyle. With 554 year-round residents and a seasonal population of 25,000, the town is hailed as a “place to bond with family and friends.”

  • Sixty-two-unit apartment complex approved for Shallotte

    SHALLOTTE—Shallotte is one step closer to a new apartment complex—River Pointe Apartments.

    The proposed apartment complex encompasses a 62-unit, 4-building complex at 4620 White Street on 6.27 acres of land.

    “I am here to answer any questions you might have about our project,” Brian Smith of Southern Properties & Development said to aldermen at the April board meeting.

    Smith represents the property owners Maurice Hawes and the estate of Elba Hawes.

Small businesses represent 98 percent of the businesses in Brunswick County, create three out of every four new jobs, and generate a majority of American innovations.

  • Unemployment climbing statewide

    Unemployment rates increased in all of North Carolina’s 100 counties in January. The statewide not seasonally adjusted rate was 10.2 percent.

    Brunswick County continued to remain higher than the state average with an unemployment rate of 12.2 percent.

    The North Carolina Department of Commerce released the state’s county and area employment figures for January.
