  • North Carolina’s ‘move over law’ expands to include utility vehicles

    In July, North Carolina lawmakers expanded the state’s “move over law” to include electric utility vehicles restoring power on the sides of roadways. The “move over law” requires motorists to slow down and cautiously approach emergency vehicles with flashing lights, moving over one lane when possible.

  • ATMC hosts annual meeting

    More than 2,500 people gathered at the Odell Williamson Auditorium at Brunswick Community College for ATMC’s 53rd annual meeting. A barbecue pork and fried chicken dinner was served, along with homemade ice cream. 

    Members were treated to an evening of entertainment provided by the Andrew Thielen Big Band performing the greatest songs of yesterday and today. Directors Malcolm Grissett and James H. “Jamie” Milliken were each re-elected for three-year terms. Thomas Chancey of Shallotte was the grand prize winner of $500 cash.

  • ATMC to have 53rd annual meeting Oct. 8

    ATMC’s 53rd annual membership meeting will be Friday, Oct. 8, in the Odell Williamson Auditorium on the campus of Brunswick Community College in Supply.

    Member registration will begin at 4 p.m. A barbecue pork and fried chicken dinner will be served outside from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

  • Church to open own practice in Supply Medical Campus

    Dr. Lori Church, a general practitioner formerly with Sunset Beach Family Medicine, will open a practice of her own Sept. 9 at Supply Medical Campus, sharing a suite with cardiologist Dr. Jeffrey Seder.

    “I always had a desire and people were always telling my I should practice for myself,” Church said recently, as she busily prepared her new office in the main building on the campus.

    Sunset Beach Family Medicine officially shut its doors June 11, after Novant Medical Group decided not to continue its partnership with the practice.

  • Brunswick Community Hospital recognized for patient safety

    Brunswick Community Hospital was recently recognized as a leader in clinical quality and patient safety for its efforts to reduce the incidence of hospital-acquired infections, specifically Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA infections, which are difficult to treat if they develop.

  • Tax-free weekend expected to be a boon to local retailers

    Several local retailers are looking forward to a lucrative weekend Aug. 6-8 as families take advantage of the state’s “sales tax holiday” savings opportunity to buy new clothes, new notebooks, pens and pencils and laptops.

    The tax-free weekend begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday and will last through 11:59 p.m. Sunday, offering a “holiday” from the state’s 6.75 percent sales tax rate on specific school-related items.

    South Carolina is also having a tax-free weekend at the same time.

  • Gas station, Domino’s, Dairy Queen planned for N.C. 211 intersection

    SUPPLY—A new Minuteman Food Mart, Dairy Queen and Domino’s combination is being planned at the intersection of U.S. 17 and Southport-Supply Road.

    The new gas station-convenience store-restaurant combination is scheduled to be complete this fall.

    According to Wesley Campbell, vice president of Campbell Oil-Minuteman, headquartered in Elizabethtown, construction on the project is scheduled to begin Monday, and the 4,000-plus-square-foot building should be complete by November.

  • Raspet co-edits estate manual

    Two Smith Moore Leatherwood trust and estate attorneys, Tanya Oesterreich, based in Charlotte, and Jill Raspet, who lives in Brunswick County and is based in Wilmington, served as co-managing editors of the seventh edition of the North Carolina Estate Administration Manual as a part of their service on the Estate Planning & Fiduciary Law Section of the North Carolina Bar Association.

  • Groundbreaking for new First Bank location set for September

    Officials expect to break ground on the new First Bank location in Shallotte this September, and the building should take about six months to complete.

    According to First Bank City Executive Dave Kesterson, the company’s engineers are going through some last-minute revisions to the original plan to meet the town of Shallotte’s specifications.

    He said a new building on the 1-acre property off Whiteville Road would be a welcome change from the temporary location now in use on Main Street.
