  • Coca-Cola moving Wilmington distribution center to Leland

    Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Consolidated is moving its regional distribution center in Wilmington to the Leland Industrial Park by the end of the year, the Brunswick County Economic Development Commission (EDC) has announced.

    The company has agreed to purchase the 80,000-square-foot former MarKraft building in the industrial park and invest more than $2 million in the project, EDC director Jim Bradshaw said.

  • May home sales up over April, down from last year

    Home sales in Brunswick County increased last month over April, going from 119 to 151, but the number was a drop from May 2009 when the total hit 170.

    Even with the up-and-down numbers, local Realtors and developers say they are seeing increase in buyer interest—mainly in the less-expensive homes and properties.

    “Things have picked up some,” Linda Stephens of Rampage Realty on the Holden Beach mainland said this week, but, “It’s not what it should be.”

    Dosher Memorial Hospital, 924 N. Howe St. in Southport, has opened a sleep disorder laboratory for the diagnosis and treatment of potentially serious sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea, excessive snoring, narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome and periodic limb movement disorder.

    BRUNSWICK/COLUMBUS COUNTY LINE—Government and business officials from across the county, region and state braved the rain and mud to celebrate the groundbreaking of the International Logistics Park of North Carolina Tuesday morning.

    The 1,000-acre park is a unique venture between Brunswick and Columbus counties and the state.

  • County logistics park receives state rail site award

    The N.C. Railroad Company and a private consulting firm have selected the Mid-Atlantic Logistics Center in northern Brunswick County as the best distribution site in the recent recognition of the Great Freight Rail Sites in North Carolina.

    Brunswick County’s Economic Development Commission is hoping the recognition will lead to more industrial prospects for the now-incomplete park.

  • Business partners attempt to revolutionize Internet filtering

    Local business partners Kevin Skipper and David Little have created something unique in the computer world—a way for families and businesses to block access to certain websites without using expensive software.

    Little, the owner of Knosys Computers in Calabash, and businessman Skipper have created WebFilterPro, which uses domain name system (DNS) technology rather than software to block certain sites.

    Both fathers, the two men said they like the idea of creating an affordable way for families to control Internet use in a household.

  • Scam calls not from Security Savings Bank; no losses reported

    Brunswick County residents have been receiving calls and messages from people identifying themselves as representatives of Security Savings Bank asking them to call a designated number, saying there is a problem with their Visa debit card.

    According to Security’s vice president and information technology manager Phil Fravel, these calls are not valid, and people who receive them should hang up immediately.

    “If, by chance, they do respond, they should call us immediately so we can block their accounts,” Fravel said.

  • Market slows project, but plans for Wisteria Place continue; construction expected this fall

    When developer Brian Griffin started making plans for a unique gated community off Village Point Road in Shallotte several years ago, he hadn’t predicted the coming recession or bank failures that have resulted in stalled development and under-whelming real estate sales.

    “Four or five years ago, people would buy a piece of land sight unseen. That’s what got us here today. They thought they could flip it and make a few bucks,” Griffin said this week.
