  • Dancing liberties take their final bows as tax season ends

    The “dancing liberties” have made driving in Shallotte a little more interesting since the year started, but as of April 15, wavers are no longer putting on free “shows” to entice taxpayers to visit Liberty Tax Service.

    It’s been a busy year for local tax preparers, and Liberty’s signature attention-getter has served as a visible reminder of the looming tax deadline during the company’s first year in Shallotte.

  • Restaurant jobs available as tourist season begins

    Tourism is Brunswick County’s lifeblood, and every spring and summer, people in need of even part-time or temporary work find what they’re looking for in local restaurants.

    Two new restaurants have opened recently in Brunswick County, Tokyo Express in Shallotte and Bourbon Street Restaurant & Bar in Ocean Isle Beach.

    Tokyo Express opened two weeks ago on the north end of Shallotte with three employees.

  • Chamber’s first 'Speed Networking' event a hit with local entrepreneurs

    It’s like speed dating, only in this case no one is trying to make a love connection. Instead, participants show up at “speed networking” events to tell as many people as possible about their businesses or organizations in the hopes of increasing visibility, meeting new people and making business connections.

    Representatives from 33 local businesses and agencies participated in the Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce’s first-ever speed networking function last Wednesday at Planet Fun’s Starz Grille.

  • Brunswick County Chamber honors citizens, businesses

    SUPPLY—The Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce honored its members for their hard work in a challenging economic year at its annual meeting Tuesday night at 101 Stone Chimney Place.

    Business leaders and local elected officials gathered for the dinner, awards ceremony and to witness the “passing of the gavel.” The chamber’s 2009 president Bobby Davis handed the ceremonial gavel to 2010 president Ron Watts.

    ATMC Wireless has upgraded its wireless network with new 3G technology throughout Brunswick County.

    The name 3G stands for third generation wireless technology. 3G allows ATMC Wireless customers to experience mobile broadband speeds much faster than what is available with 2G networks.

    “The ATMC Wireless 3G Network is the largest and fastest 3G network in Brunswick County. It is also a part of the AT&T 3G network, the fastest 3G network in the nation,” said Roger Cox, Executive Vice President of ATMC Wireless Operations.

  • Local architecture, engineering firm launches project in South America

    H. Burkert & Company (HBC), a local landscape architecture, land planning and civil engineering firm, unveiled its first South American development project at the recent Urban Land Institute (ULI) conference in Miami, Fla.

    Coincidently, HBC’s main office is in Bolivia, whose town name and historical livelihood were based on its import relationship with South America.

  • Restaurants receive health grades

    Environmental health specialists with the Brunswick County Health Department inspected and graded local restaurants and other food establishments during the past month.

    Grades are based on a perfect score of 100, with points taken away for infractions of state health standards. A score of 90 or better represents an A; 80-89, B; 70-79, C. Establishments with a score below C would not be allowed to operate. Establishments which have two scores during the same inspection period have been regraded at the management’s request.

  • All-sprinkler development to break ground

    SHALLOTTE—Energy-efficient, structurally sound houses with installed sprinkler systems are the homes of the future, and local developer Brian Griffin wants to bring a community with those features to Brunswick County.

    Griffin’s Wisteria Place will be a cottage/Craftsman style community off Village Point Road in Shallotte. His company will break ground on the new development Nov. 1.

    One major difference between this planned community and others in Brunswick County is all houses will come with sprinklers installed.
