Coastroad Hearth & Patio in Shallotte won a bronze award in the Residential Specialty category in the 29th annual Qualified Remodeler (QR) Master Design Awards Contest.

Sponsored by Qualified Remodeler Magazine, the Master Design Awards recognizes outstanding achievement in residential remodeling projects in 22 categories.

Nufarm Turf & Specialty, a member of the Professional Landcare Network (PLANET), participated in “Renewal & Remembrance” at Arlington National Cemetery and Historic Congressional Cemetery on July 21.

Hundreds of landscape and lawn care specialists from across the nation brought their crews to Arlington National and Historic Congressional cemeteries to spend the day mulching, caring for and cabling trees with lightening protection, pruning, liming, planting and aerating as well as installing an irrigation system at Arlington National Cemetery.

The news staff of The Brunswick Beacon recently learned it has won four awards in the National Newspaper Association’s Better Newspaper Contest.

The team of Kathryn Jacewicz, Caroline Curran and Laura Lewis won first place for their coverage of an Ocean Isle Beach fire that killed seven college students and injured six others.

They were competing against other non-daily newspapers with circulations of 12,000 or more across the nation.

Judges said, “Clearly a lot of effort went into this coverage. Excellent job. In-depth information.”

Despite the slow economy, the Brunswick County Economic Development Commission has seen an increase in prospects looking to locate in the county and is beefing up its efforts to attract industry here and expand existing businesses.

EDC director Jim Bradshaw said recently the commission is in talks with three industrial prospects including two boatbuilding companies. Two local boat plants, Southport Boat Works and U.S. Marine, recently announced layoffs due to decreasing sales.
