  • Brunswick County restaurants receive health grades

    Environmental health specialists with the Brunswick County Health Department inspected and graded local restaurants and other food establishments during the past month.

    Grades are based on a perfect score of 100, with points taken away for infractions of state health standards. A score of 90 or better represents an A; 80-89, B; 70-79, C. Establishments with a score below C would not be allowed to operate. Establishments which have two scores during the same inspection period have been regraded at the management’s request.

  • Dollar General to open new store

    Dollar General will open a new store at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 31, at 1745 Southport Supply Drive SE, Bolivia. The grand-opening celebration will run through June 1.

    The new 9,014-square-foot store will employ six to 10 people.

    The new Dollar General layout is designed to make shopping easier and simpler for customers, according to a news release.

  • Dosher Hospital's patient satisfaction rating high

    Dosher Memorial Hospital has announced patients have rated Dosher Hospital above other hospitals in the region in quality of communications, responsiveness and the ability to control pain, according to information collected as part of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Hospital Quality Initiative (HQI).

    The CMS survey represents the nation’s only standardized approach to collecting and measuring the patient’s perspective of hospital care.

  • Real estate sales may be on an upswing

    Is the real estate market in Brunswick County on the upswing?

    Local agents and brokers say it’s not where they want it to be, and it probably won’t return to the 2005 peak, but it’s improving. The numbers back them up.

    Most in the business believe the market is returning to a “stable” level, with home values increasing steadily rather than at the rapid rates of several years ago.

  • Bike Week events rev up; Brunswick feels effects

    County residents see them riding up and down U.S. 17 every year at this time—leather-clad bikers heading for Myrtle Beach Bike Week.

    So does the rally have any other effect on Brunswick County? Absolutely, say local bikers and businesspeople.

    Wayne Mooney, president of the Brunswick County Concerned Bikers Association said this week all 120 chapter members make their way to the center of the Bike Week action at some point during the week.

    Mooney says the best part of the event is the camaraderie, “riding with other bikers, seeing the other bikes.”

  • Dosher makes donation to medical clinics

    Dosher Hospital, in partnership with community physicians, presented the New Hope Clinic and Brunswick Adult Medical Clinic each with checks for $4,605 to assist with patient care for the uninsured. The donated funds were raised by local doctors and matched by Dosher Hospital.
