  • Health department restaurant grades

    Environmental health specialists with the Brunswick County Health Department inspected and graded local restaurants and other food establishments during the past month.

    Grades are based on a perfect score of 100, with points taken away for infractions of state health standards. A score of 90 or better represents an A; 80-89, B; 70-79, C. Establishments with a score below C would not be allowed to operate. Establishments which have two scores during the same inspection period have been regraded at the management’s request.

  • Ground broken for nursing center in Shallotte

    A group gathered on Old Ocean Highway Sunday afternoon to break ground on a new skilled rehab and nursing center.

    Don Beaver, owner, Carol Prater-Webb, vice-president of operations; Vickie Carroll-Beaver, COO; Rep. Dewey Hill, project manager Joe Civitarese and western regional director of operations Alan Beaver broke ground on the new facility.

    Other company officials on site were Maria Yane, regional clinical nurse consultant, Terri Gibson, corporate director of marketing, architect David Polston and Becky Gibbons, CFO.

    Rep. discusses communication service issues

    U.S. Rep. Mike McIntyre recently welcomed representatives from Star Telephone and Atlantic Telephone to discuss issues affecting communications service for consumers in Southeastern North Carolina, according to a news release.

    McIntyre and the telecommunication representatives explored the challenges small communications providers face in bringing affordable communications technologies to the rural communities in the 7th Congressional district.

  • ATMC addresses misconceptions about digital TV signals

    Your TV will not become obsolete on Feb. 17, 2009, and you don’t have to buy a high-definition TV set to replace it.

    But those are some of the misconceptions ATMC staffers have been hearing from their customers since the Federal Communications Commission announced its plans to prohibit TV stations from sending out analog signals in 2009.

    On Feb. 17, 2009, all local stations that transmit analog signals will be required to start sending digital signals, according to the FCC regulations.

  • Local builder earns national honor

    SUNSET BEACH—Brunswick County is now home to a national award-winning builder of Southern-style homes.

    Southern Living magazine has named local home builder Jeff Sanderson, founder and president of Whitney Blair Inc., the 2008 Custom Builder of the Year—the first builder in North or South Carolina to be so honored.

    He will be featured in the magazine’s November issue.

    Sanderson found out about the honor when it was announced at the Southern Living Custom Builder Annual Conference in Alabama.

  • Leaders learn to create culture that encourages small business

    When Don Betts was a young chamber of commerce executive in a small Georgia town, a young man approached him about buying property the chamber had set aside for future development.

    Betts told him the chamber was waiting for a big company to come to town and set up shop on the property, but he could bring his ideas to the chamber authority for their approval.

    “He said ‘I have a few ideas, and I can pay cash for it,’” Betts recalled. “The authority members said, ‘We’re saving that property.’”

  • First local entrepreneur conference called a 'moderate success'

    The South Brunswick Islands Committee of 100’s first entrepreneurship conference didn’t have people lining up outside the conference rooms, but organizers say the quality of the event will get people talking.

    The event was April 10 and 11 at Sea Trail Conference Center in Sunset Beach and also featured a dinner at Silver Coast Winery.

    “We had a moderate turnout,” said the committee’s executive director Bob Stinson.

    “We look at it as a good start. The first one gets the word out about the quality of the event.”
