    SHALLOTTE—A free monthly business advice session over breakfast is proving popular with local business owners.

    That’s not surprising, since according to the Employment Security Commission, 80 percent of Brunswick County’s businesses have less than 30 employees, and 90 percent have less than 20.

  • Coldwell Banker Sloane Realty honors top employees

    Coldwell Banker Sloane Realty recognized the outstanding achievements of its top sales agents for 2007 at its annual Agent Award Dinner on Feb. 19 at Brunswick Plantation.

    The company, awarded Coldwell Banker’s President’s Award of Honor, as well as the premier office designation for its Ocean Isle Beach office, was the No. 1 real estate company in Brunswick County in 2007, based on listing market share, pending market share and sold sales volume.

  • Brunswick County restaurants receive health grades

    Environmental health specialists with the Brunswick County Health Department inspected and graded local restaurants and other food establishments during the past month.

    Grades are based on a perfect score of 100, with points taken away for infractions of state health standards. A score of 90 or better represents an A; 80-89, B; 70-79, C. Establishments with a score below C would not be allowed to operate. Establishments which have two scores during the same inspection period have been regraded at the management’s request.

  • Brent Hood earns Master Award for 2007 sales production

    Century 21 Home Town Realty announces Century 21 Real Estate LLC recently recognized Brent Hood, sales associate with the office, as one of the system’s top-producers nationwide. He was honored with the coveted emerald-level Century 21 Masters Award.

    Emerald level status is awarded to an agent who has met minimum sales production of 40 or more closed transaction sides within a calendar year. A gold-plated lapel pin with emerald accent is awarded to the agent during the awards ceremony, in addition to a trophy and a personal invitation to attend a Century top agent retreat.

  • Woodlands at Crow Creek has grand opening for wellness center

    More than 100 residents of the Woodlands at Crow Creek attended the grand opening of their new Wellness Center. Its purpose is for residents to remain and become active without having to leave their neighborhood.

    “With the number of residents in attendance today and the excitement in our conversations with them, it is obvious that our community has become a family atmosphere,” said Brian Smith, contractor/developer.

  • Waccamaw branch celebrates grand opening

    Waccamaw Bank Board Chairman Alan Thompson and CEO Jim Graham join Waccamaw’s vice president and area executive Dianne McRainey, Brunswick County Sheriff Ronald Hewett, Shallotte Mayor Gerald Long, Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce President Cathy Altman and bank employees to cut the ribbon on the newest Waccamaw branch, the former Coastal Federal bank on Smith Avenue in Shallotte. The bank had a daylong celebration at the new branch. This is the seventh Waccamaw branch in Brunswick County, and Graham said the bank plans to continue to expand in the county.

  • Southport Internal Medicine to host open house

    Southport Internal Medicine will host a community open house from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21.

    The public can meet the group’s newest physician, Thomas Beckett, M.D., and tour the new office at 1456 Howe St., Suites 201 and 202, Southport.

    The group moved to its new office in October 2007. Just a few blocks from the former office at 11 East 9th St., the new, larger office is across from Kerr Drug.

  • Festival, Coffey receive awards

    At the recent North Carolina Association of Festivals & Events Showfest, the North Carolina Oyster Festival, hosted by the Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce, won several awards including event of the year, best brochure and best event photo. Kristin Coffey, the chamber’s festival and events director, earned the festival event director of the year award. 'Kristin has done an amazing job in planning, implementing and growing our festival,' stated chamber president Cathy Altman.

  • Curves plans 10th annual food drive

    Curves of Shallotte will be participating in the Curves Food Drive to benefit local food banks.

    Last year, the Curves Food Drive collected nearly 11 million pounds of food for local communities all over the world. This year, Curves has set a goal to collect 15 million pounds to help even more people in need of healthy food.
