  • State’s unemployment rate up again for July

    The state’s unemployment rate has increased again.

    North Carolina’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for July increased to 9.6 percent. It was 9.4 percent for June.

    July’s state rate is higher than the national unemployment rate for July, which was 8.3 percent.

    North Carolina’s July 2012 unemployment rate is 1.1-percentage point less than it was a year ago.

  • Brunswick Novant Medical Center celebrates first birthday

    BOLIVIA—Brunswick Novant Medical Center just celebrated an important birthday—its own.

    Tuesday, July 31, marked the first birthday of the hospital, which opened a year ago.

    Hospital spokeswoman Amy Myers described the anniversary as “capping a dramatic turnaround for medical care in Brunswick County that began with Novant Health’s arrival six years ago.”

  • Golden Corral set to open Friday

    SHALLOTTE—The steaks are already marinating as Golden Corral prepares to open its doors.

    According to owners Mickey and David Chance, if everything stays on track with inspections, the restaurant will open its doors for the first time in Shallotte at 7:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 3.

    At press time Tuesday, everything was on track for the Friday opening. David Chance said the staff has been hired and trained.

  • From gas station gourmet to local fast food delight

    SHALLOTTE—In the autumn of 2010 a new dining option opened quietly in Shallotte—one that took taste buds by storm.

    The Grille, owned and operated by Sal Rubio, opened inside the BP gas station behind Naber Dodge.

    Rubio, a chef in the area since 1993, was in the catering business and decided to give his business a storefront where people could drop in and get gourmet soups and sandwiches. He opened the restaurant quietly to see how things would progress. He was its only employee.

    Since last season, the Saia’s have been diligent in signing up new independent operators, building a new warehouse facility on Beach Drive in Ocean Isle Beach, and preparing for the 2012 tourist season.

    Vanessa Norton, RN, MSN, NP-C, received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Queens College in Charlotte, and then went on to complete her master’s degree in nursing with a focus in adult chronic care from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She has spent the majority of her career serving Charlotte and the surrounding communities.

    The Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce celebrated its 37th annual meeting on June 14, which gives the chamber an opportunity to look at the past year and plan for the next.
    Dennis Coffey of Dosher Memorial Hospital, 2011-2012 chamber president, presented several awards before retiring four of the 15 directors, including himself, and handed over the presidential gavel to 2012-2013 president Sam Keziah of N.C. Farm Bureau.
