Over the moon for solar eclipse: Community observes historic celestial phenomenon

Depending on the weather and one’s strategic vantage point, Monday’s cross-country viewing of the total solar eclipse brought joy to many and disappointment for others.

Locally, the unique viewing opportunity promised people who were stationed in Brunswick County a chance to see about 98 percent coverage of the moon’s shadow over the sun, with peak time at 2:48 p.m. for the Aug. 21 event.

Brunswick County Early College High School students dismissed at 11:30 a.m. Monday in anticipation of the afternoon solar eclipse.
