 Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation (BEMC) invites local agencies and groups to apply for a 2011 BEMC Community Grant.

Now in its ninth year, the program provides grants to groups that provide family services programs, civic and community programs, cultural and arts programs, emergency services or community development activities. 

Since inception, the grants program has awarded nearly $200,000 to more than 125 projects benefiting citizens all over the area.

Don’t put away your warm clothing just yet–wintry weather is in the forecast.
The National Weather Service Wilmington issued a hazardous weather outlook on Friday, Jan. 7 at 3:55 p.m. for the next few days.
“A significant winter storm is possible across the area beginning late Sunday night continuing into Monday,” the warning states.
Precipitation is expected to spread across the area from south to north through the early morning hours on Monday. The National Weather Service expects most areas should see some snow by daybreak.

•The Town of Shallotte Board of Aldermen meeting has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 11, at 6 p.m. in the Shallotte Council Chambers, 110 Cheers St. The Board of Aldermen pre-agenda meeting will begin at 5:15 p.m. in the chambers. The aldermen’s regularly scheduled meetings are on the first Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. with pre-agenda meetings beginning at 5:15 p.m.

•The planning board meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in council chambers.

As the Shallotte Farmers Market enters its sixth year in 2011, a volunteer market manager is sought.

The position is available through the Downtown Shallotte committee.

For the past three years, Linda and Jack Herrick led the way as managers. The couple, involved from the start, has watched the farmers market grow annually.
