  • Two plead guilty to sex offenses in Superior Court

    BOLIVIA—Two men have pleaded guilty to sex offenses in Brunswick County Superior Court on Monday, July 26, according to the district attorney’s office.

    Frank Elmore Gore, 22, of Willard, pleaded guilty in Brunswick County Superior Court to one count of attempted first-degree sex offense against an 11-year-old who lives in Leland, according to a DA’s office press release.

    The Brunswick Beacon does not identify victims of sexual assault.

  • Deadlocked jury leads to mistrial in former officer's wrongful termination trial

    BOLIVIA—Was Terri Oxford fired from the town of Holden Beach because she is a woman?

    Ten jurors thought she was—two jurors thought she wasn’t.

    A Brunswick County jury failed to unanimously determine the answer to that question, leading to a mistrial in the gender discrimination and wrongful termination trial against the town of Holden Beach.

    After nearly three days of deliberation, jury foreperson Dianna Laster told Superior Court Judge Ola Lewis jurors were deadlocked at 10-2 without the chance of anyone changing their minds.

    BOLIVIA—After seven days of testimony in the wrongful termination and gender discrimination trial against the town of Holden Beach, the town’s fate and that of the plaintiff, former Holden Beach police officer Terri Oxford, were placed in the hands of the jurors.

  • Second witness testifies to odor of alcohol at scene with chief

    BOLIVIA—Terri Oxford said she smelled alcohol when Holden Beach Police Chief Wally Layne responded to a cardiac arrest on Holden Beach in November 2004.

    Layne said he wasn’t intoxicated that November evening—that he wasn’t even drinking.

    Oxford, who worked for the town police department from 1999 until 2008, filed a wrongful termination and gender discrimination lawsuit after she was fired from the town in 2008.

  • Grand jury returns indictments

    The Brunswick County Grand Jury under the direction of Judge Ola Lewis with prosecutor Rex Gore and courtroom clerk Michelle Warth returned the following indictments during a Superior Court session on July 19:

    Brady Artnel, 40, of 499 Maple Branches Drive, Leland; two counts felony trafficking in marijuana.

  • Defense testimony begins in former officer’s wrongful termination trial

    BOLIVIA—Testimony for the defense began Monday in the civil trial of former Holden Beach police officer Terri Oxford, who sued the town of Holden Beach for wrongful termination and gender discrimination after she was fired from the police department in 2008.

    Attorneys for Oxford rested their case Monday afternoon, a week after the trial first began in Brunswick County Superior Court.

  • Brunswick County grand jury returns indictments

    The Brunswick County Grand Jury under the direction of Judge Ola Lewis with prosecutor Rex Gore and courtroom clerk Michelle Warth returned the following indictments during a Superior Court session on July 6:

    Coty Michael Alford, 18, of 1800 Clemmons Road, Bolivia; felony breaking and/or entering, felony larceny after breaking/entering.

    Danyel Raye Alston, 36, of 7662 Daws Creek Road SE, Winnabow; felony possession of cocaine.

    Coty Michael Alford, 18, of 1800 Clemmons Road, Bolivia: misdemeanor possession stolen goods/property, felony obtain property false pretense.

    Perry Lamont Alton, 38, of 1905 Crawford Road, Raleigh; felony obtain property false pretense.
