  • SHALLOTTE CRIME REPORT

    Shallotte police charged the following people and investigated the following incidents last week.

    •Police charged Michael Kelly McPaul, 34, of 7611 Swamp Fox Hwy. E., Tabor City, with possession of drug paraphernalia. He was taken to the Brunswick County Detention Center and placed on a $2,000 secured bond.

    •Police charged Donald Richardson Porterfield, 46, 120 N.E. 7th St., Oak Island, with shoplifting. He was taken to the Brunswick County Detention Center and placed on a $500 secured bond.

  • ACE team roundup

    The Aggressive Criminal Enforcement (ACE) Team is a support unit whose primary functions are traffic enforcement and assisting in the apprehension of drug traffickers in the county. The ACE team conducts driver’s license checkpoints, as well as street-level investigations on controlled substances.

    The ACE team works with the sheriff’s office K-9 Enforcement Team and Drug Enforcement Unit to apprehend narcotics suspects as well as saturating hot spots where criminal activity is reported.

  • Holden Beach crime report

    The Holden Beach Police Department investigated the following incidents from May 1 through June 12. All information is taken directly from incident reports.

    •Larceny of $300 in money/cash on High Point Street reported May 9. Police report the case has been closed. The victim is seeking civil restitution.

    •Suspicious death May 12 on beach strand. Incident was ruled a suicide. Weapon has been found, according to police.

    •Larceny from buildings on Heron Court reported May 21; suspect took sports and recreation equipment valued at $500.

  • Crime report

    Brunswick County Sheriff’s deputies investigated the following incidents last week, which are taken directly from sheriff’s office incident reports:

    •Breaking and entering and larceny on Evergreen Drive in Supply; suspect caused damage to back door and took a DVD player/VCR and a radio.

    •Breaking and entering and larceny on White Oak Drive in Ocean Isle Beach.

    •Property damage on Woodlands Way in Calabash; suspect hit a golf ball into a window.

  • K-9 Report

    The K-9 Enforcement team answers calls, conducts driver’s license checkpoints and assists with other agencies when K-9s are needed.

    Deputies recently answered 25 calls, made five drug arrests, wrote 10 uniform citations and issued 17 warning citations.

    Driver’s license checkpoints were conducted on Hickman Road, Holden Beach Road, Midway Road, Long Beach Road, Ash Little River Road and Blue Banks Loop.

     

  • Crime report

    Agents of the Brunswick County Drug Enforcement Unit conducted a vehicle stop on May 29 on U.S. 17 near N.C. 904. Agents seized more than a pound of marijuana and arrested Terrance Clarida, 29, of Catawba Road in Ash. Clarida was charged with possession with the intent to manufacture, sell or distribute marijuana, maintaining a vehicle to keep a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

    He was placed on a $5,000 secured bond.

  • Suspect to be charged with Sunset Beach break-ins, thefts

    SUNSET BEACH—A man in custody in Columbus County will be charged with recent break-ins and thefts on the Sunset Beach island.

    Raymond Lee Jones III, 24, faces charges in connection with the incidents reported June 5 and 6, Sunset Beach Deputy Chief Steve Smith said Tuesday.

    Jones currently is being held on theft charges in Columbus County.

  • District Court Docket

    The following cases were adjudicated over five days of District Criminal Court on June 3, 4, 5, 8 and 9 in Bolivia.

    Wednesday, June 3

    Judge Sherry Tyler presided over the following cases with prosecutor Cathi Radford and courtroom clerk and Lisa Quick:

    Michael C. Abercrombie, no operator’s license, prayer for judgment continued and costs; failure to reduce speed, voluntarily dismissed.

    Betsy Carol Adcock, improper equipment, costs.

    Sasha Vanessa Ahlers, speeding 65 in a 55 zone, costs.

  • Two arrested, 88 marijuana plants seized in two investigations

    The Drug Enforcement Unit seized 61 marijuana plants and made one arrest after an investigation in the Holden Beach area.

    Drug agents seized 61 marijuana plants growing in a wooded area off Hazelnut Drive on June 9. An investigation led agents to 1129 Bluefish St. in Holden Beach, where they found three ounces of marijuana, grow material, seven additional marijuana plants, a 72-plant seed bed and related drug paraphernalia at the Bluefish residence.

  • Brunswick 911 center telecommunicator arrested on drug charges

    A telecommuinicator with the Brunswick County 911 Center has been suspended pending a criminal investigation.

    Lana Tripp Rising, 36, of 4520 Squirrel Ave., Shallotte, was charged with one count of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud, which is a felony, on June 1. She was suspended without pay the following day.

    Drug agent Israel West said Rising was arrested after she allegedly changed the strength of a prescription narcotic from 5 milligrams to 7.5 milligrams and then tried to have the forged prescription filled.
