  • Brunswick County Sheriff’s deputies investigated the following incidents last week, which are taken directly from incident reports:

    •Property damage on Ploof Road in Leland; suspect threw rocks at victim’s car window.

    •Larceny on Shadow Circle Drive in Ash; suspect took mail from victim’s mailbox.

    •Breaking and entering, larceny and identity theft on Old Shallotte Road in Shallotte; suspect entered victim’s vehicle, stole items and used victim’s credit card.

  • ACE roundup

    The Aggressive Criminal Enforcement (ACE) Team is a support unit, whose primary functions are traffic enforcement and assisting in the apprehension of drug traffickers in the county.

    The ACE team conducts driving while impaired, driver’s license and criminal information checkpoints, as well as street-level investigations on controlled substances. The ACE team works with the sheriff’s office K-9 Enforcement Team and Drug Enforcement Unit to apprehend narcotics suspects as well as saturating hot spots where criminal activity is reported.

  • Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program amps up enforcement projects

    Troopers with the N.C. State Highway Patrol’s Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program amped up their patrols last week with a special two-day enforcement campaign.

    Troopers with the motor carrier division increased patrols on U.S. 17 last Tuesday, Nov. 25 and on U.S. 74 on Wednesday, Nov. 26.

    According to Sgt. T.D. Wheeler, the scope of the enforcement project focused on commercial motor vehicle safety and aggressive driving by passenger vehicles around these trucks.

    Wednesday, Nov. 19

    Judge Marion R. Warren presided over the following cases with prosecutor Cathi Radford and courtroom clerk Michelle Warth:

    Michele Margaret Bellamy, failure to reduce speed, voluntarily dismissed.

    Michelle Lee Benton, license not in possession, voluntarily dismissed.

    Laura Ashley Beyer, window tinting violation, voluntarily dismissed.

  • Two Oak Island men charged with area break-ins

    BOLIVIA—Two Oak Island men have been charged with breaking into several homes in Bolivia and Southport between Nov. 6 and Nov.19.

    Dustin Lynn Hensley, 24, of 311 NE 61st St., has been charged with five counts of felonious breaking and entering, three counts of larceny, four counts of felony conspiracy, three counts of felony possession of stolen goods and assault by pointing a gun. Hensley remained in custody at the Brunswick County Detention Center under a $125,000 secured bond.

  • Gause sentenced to more than 10 years for habitual felon, cocaine possession

    James Alfonzo Gause has been convicted of possession of cocaine and being a habitual felon. Last week, Superior Court Judge Gary Locklear sentenced Gause, 38, to 10 years and four months in N.C. Department of Corrections.

    Assistant district attorney Chris Thomas said a jury deliberated for 40 minutes for the cocaine possession charge and six minutes for the habitual felon charge.

  • SHALLOTTE CRIME REPORT

    Shallotte police charged the following people and investigated the following incidents last week. All information is taken directly from police reports.

    •Police charged David Carl Collins, 44, of 2 Lee Drive, Wilmington, with driving while impaired Tuesday, Nov. 18 in the Kangaroo parking lot. He was taken to the Brunswick County Detention Center and placed on a $500 secured bond.

  • Former detention officer charged with assault

    A former Brunswick County detention officer has been charged with assault on a female.

    Shallotte Police charged Gregory Robert Smith, 26, of 628 Village Road, Shallotte, with assault on a female Nov. 19.

    Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Charlie Miller said Smith was employed as a detention officer from March 11, 2008, until he resigned Nov. 20.

    Smith was making an annual salary of $28,789, Miller said.

    Smith’s district court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 18.
