    BCC foundation
    kicks off fund drive
    The Foundation of Brunswick Community College (BCC) officially kicked off its annual campus fund drive on April 2. This annual event is the core effort by faculty and staff to contribute to the foundation in support of student scholarships.
    “Win from Within” was the thrust of Foundation Executive Director Terry W. Mohr’s address to the crowd.

  • Volunteers needed to read to young children

    The Early Childhood Education Center is excited to celebrate the Week of the Young Child April 15-19.
    The purpose of this annual celebration is to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families, as well as recognize programs that meet the needs of young children.
    The week will include visiting readers on Tuesday, April 16, and wind up with a Bike-A-Thon and pedal car raffle on Friday, April 19.

    School relocates for 2013-14 school year
    Southport Christian School will be relocating to Beach Road Baptist Church for the 2013-2014 school year. A new educational building with 16 classrooms designed to immediately serve pre-school through middle school is now under construction and should be completed by Aug. 1. This new building plus existing classroom space at the Beach Road Baptist campus will give them the long-term ability to provide a pre-school through high school institution for the students.

  • Reading is exciting at Town Creek Elementary

    Town Creek Elementary’s mascot Swampee, along with Savannah, a K-9 with the BARK program, joined students at the book fair to support Brunswick County’s reading initiative, “Today a Reader-Tomorrow a Leader.”

    Appalachian State students get honors
    Appalachian State University has released its graduation and honors lists for the fall 2012 semester. A total of 186 graduate students and 985 undergraduate students received degrees during ceremonies in December 2012.
    Rachel Julian Dycus of Shallotte received a master’s of arts degree in educational media.

  • Young writer flies away with the competition

     

    BOLIVIA—She’s in the first grade and she beat out competition in the second and third grades.

    Carleigh Bowling is a 6-year-old first-grade student at Bolivia Elementary School. Her writing has been capturing the attention of her teachers and, more recently, judges across the state.

    Late last year, Carleigh was selected by her first-grade teacher JoAnn Tucker to enter a writing submission into an annual writing competition that pits first-grade students against second- and third-grade students.

  • School art show opens March 25

    The Franklin Square Gallery High School Art Show opens on Monday, March 25. Students from three local high schools will display an array of paintings, drawings, prints and photography, as well as three-dimensional constructions. Rusty Hughes, art instructor at Brunswick Community College, will judge their work.

  • Former NFL player encourage students to follow their dreams

    SHALLOTTE—Freeze and think about the consequences.

    That was the message shared at two area middle schools Tuesday.

    Former NFL player Levar Fisher shared his message with students at Shallotte and Cedar Grove middle schools.

    Fisher played for the New Orleans Saints and the Arizona Cardinals after playing college football at N.C. State University.

    From a young age his dream was to play in the NFL, but those around him weren’t always supportive.

    BCC sponsors sustainability symposium March 22
    To be up-to-date on current sustainability trends, Brunswick Community College (BCC), through the Green Information and Training Center, has established an annual Sustainability Symposium and Expo. Now in its third year, the event is hosted by BCC’s Economic and Workforce Development in collaboration with the North Carolina Military Business Center at the BCC Leland Center for Economic and Workforce Development. This year’s theme is “Sustainability and the Future of Energy and Water.”
