  • Students learn about giving back

    It’s never too early to learn to help others and give back to society. Students in the Communities in Schools After School program at Lincoln Elementary have been doing just that.
    They collected a truckload of holiday decorations, winter clothing and household items to donate to the CIS Thrift Shop.
    “The children were excited to share what they have and help other children in need,” said Minnie Holiday, CIS site manager.
    With money tight, more and more people are turning to thrift shops to make ends meet.

  • Students gain valuable experience through Teen and Peer Court

    Brunswick County students believe in second chances. As volunteers in Teen and Peer Court programs, students serve as defense and prosecuting attorneys, clerks, bailiffs and jurors to determine sentencing for first-time juvenile offenders who have admitted to their crimes.

  • VWES students take part in photo workshop

    Kids & Teens Only Development Workshops conducted a photo workshop that introduced Communities in Schools students at Virginia Williamson Elementary School to the basics of photography.
    The workshop exposed students to the art and technical side of photography before the digital evolution.
    Students were taught about composition, what a camera is, how a camera works, and how to make a pinhole camera out of a tin can.

  • Students experiment to learn about wind energy

    Southport Elementary fifth-grade teacher Mrs. Blacklock was one of two teachers who requested assistance and gave local 4-H youth a chance to practice their leadership skills.
    On Wednesday, Oct. 26, Angie Lawrence, 4-H program assistant, and her helpers Alexis Apple, Angelique Apple, Owen Bell and Bobbi Jane Lawrence taught students about renewable energy and more. The youth who participated in the program enhanced their engineering skills by designing, building and testing two different wind turbine models.

    WRN was an idea launched by Brunswick County media coordinators in partnership with Acacia Dixon, instructional technology coordinator.

  • Motorcycle skills course now offered at BCC

     SUPPLY—Have you ever wanted to learn to ride a motorcycle? Or are you looking to sharpen your motorcycle driving skills?

    Brunswick Community College will begin to teach motorcycle rider education and safety courses for beginners and experienced riders.

    “With all of the motorcycle enthusiasts in the county, we think the county has been needing this for a long time,” said Lori Summerlin, program coordinator. “In the last few years there has been an increase in the volume of people in this area on motorcycles.”

  • 4-H’ers find reading program helps students

    Beginning in October 2008, Brunswick County 4-H instituted “Reading Makes the Best Better” to celebrate National 4-H Week and to offer 4-H members the chance to do what 4-H’ers love to do best through community service, citizenship activities and education.
